Biodiversity meets community

This month has been a great one for supporting local issues as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability and responsibility.

After hearing a plea on local radio for help we were more than happy to head across to Shobdon Airfield, just a stone’s throw from our main manufacturing site in Pembridge, Herefordshire – and a small team of us were recruited to plant trees around the new Shobdon Airfield memorial.

The memorial commemorates the 1,345 pilots, 291 gliding instructors and 218 tug pilots who trained at the North Herefordshire site. Between 1942 and 1945, 96,000 glider launches were made from the airfield.

The purpose of this site is to remember the importance of this little airfield but in remembering the past, the current community of Shobdon pulled together as a team, planting hundreds of shrubs and trees to benefit future generations.

Many local businesses turned up for the occasion, donating all the trees, shrubs and their time and the day came to a close by the hoisting of the flags and local school children planting a single olive tree, a well-known token of peace.

We look forward to visiting the memorial in years to come and we’ve even had to promise to bring our pruning secateurs!

Kingspan Insulation takes part in many community projects every year, our Community Trust was set up in 2006 and continues to make it possible for local people to plan and carry about projects that will directly benefits their community. Funding can be given to projects that meet one or more of the objectives, to support conservations, encourage biodiversity, improve health and fitness or to promote road safety.
