Curtain Do’s and Don’ts
Out of all the window treatment choices out there, curtains are possibly the most famous. They offer versatility that suits any window in your home, and they are available in a wide array of colors and textures. Despite how adaptable they can be, there are still do’s and don’ts to follow when hanging curtains.

DO hang high
The higher the rod, the taller the window will appear, so fix your curtain rod closer to the ceiling than the top of your window. The rule of thumb is that they should sit 4-6 inches above the window frame.
DON’T go too short
Unless you are using cafe-style curtains, the fabric should fall to the floor. These are the highwater pants of curtains and not a good look. A little puddling can be nice if you want a romantic feel but if you don’t want to worry about them dragging and getting dirty, then stop the fabric just before they hit the floor — a little under an inch is good. DO consider the light. Which room are you curtaining? If it’s the bedroom, do you like to be woken by the first rays of daylight or do you prefer total darkness? Make sure your curtains comfortably clear the sides of the window if so and think about blackout linings or blinds behind.
DON’T be exclusive. Just because you’ve decided to hang curtains doesn’t mean getting rid of blinds. In some rooms different window treatments can complement each other. Source: InsideOut
DON’T forget the hardware. Curtain rods and finials should “match” the fabric. Heavier drapes such as velvets should be on a large and somewhat decorative rods while light silks and sheers can sit on light-weight and more dainty rods. That said, they should also “match” the rest of the room. Make sure they connect to something in the room.
For instance, if you’ve got Lucite lamps or chairs, a Lucite drapery rod might be in order.
DO consider what fabric is best. Cotton is versatile and easy to clean; velvet is luxurious and private but can be a bit heavy for some rooms; sheers are light and graceful but don’t offer much in the way of privacy; and wool is heavy but strong enough to hold embellishments like tassels and fringe. What is an inverted roof?
…And how is it constructed?
An inverted roof is quite simply where the waterproofing layer is installed over the structural deck rather than over the insulation.
Rigid extruded polystyrene insulation has minimal water absorption due to its closed cell structure. This makes it the only material suitable and approved for inverted roof applications.
Inverted roof applications are becoming increasingly popular for new construction projects due to a number of benefits that we think are important to highlight:
- Extruded polystyrene, such as Kingspan Styrozone, has notable compressive capabilities that make it an ideal solution where there may be considerable foot traffic.
- Installation of the insulation is not weather dependent.
- Due to the open-jointed roof finish, the insulation can be easily lifted to allow inspection of the waterproofing system.
- The waterproofing system can be expected to have a life in excess of that obtained in an exposed situation due to protection against mechanical damage and UV degradation.
Now that we understand what an inverted roof is and some of the benefits, we’ve put together a listed build-up to help make designing your roof that bit simpler.
Internal to external roof build-up
- Concrete structural deck
- Waterproofing layer eg singly ply membrane
- Geotextile layer (non-woven polyester fleece separation layer) – this layer prevents a reaction between the insulation and the waterproofing layer
- Kingspan Styrozone insulation
- Water infiltration layer, such as Kingspan Aquazone – this layer reduces the amount of water flowing between and beneath the insulation boards, therefore minimising heat loss
- Open-jointed ballast system (gravel / paving slabs on supports) or roof garden
You’ll note that we recommend an open-jointed ballast system in conjunction with an inverted roof construction. In this next section we will explore the ‘why’ behind this.
A process called ‘freeze thaw’ occurs when a porous material such as concrete or screed is exposed to wet weather conditions. When the temperature drops to low temperatures, the water that has been absorbed into the screed or concrete will freeze. As the water expands in volume, changing from liquid water to solid ice, it contracts, breaking the once continuous substrate apart.
You might be asking yourself how is this is in any way relevant to an inverted roof construction and the content of this post. Well, this natural cycle is the very reason we do not recommend installing a continuous concrete or screed layer over Kingspan Styrozone for inverted roofs. Instead, we recommend avoiding the headache of a potentially cracked substrate and sticking to an approved open-jointed finish that is guaranteed to work all year round.

Window Quilts
These are insulating shades made from quilt material that run on a track along your window. Window quilts prevent winter heat loss and summer heat gain like other coverings, but they also form “dead” air space between quilt and window that allows for better insulation. Source: RealEstate
Solar Shades
One of the many benefits of solar shades during the summer is that you can still have your view outside, even with your shades drawn. It also blocks harmful UV rays and it will protect your furniture from sun damage and unnecessary fading. Roman Shades
Austrian-style roman shades are by far the most formal and traditional, delineated by several vertical and horizontal rows of ruched gathers and scalloping along the bottom. End Of Year Assembly Arrangements
The assembly will start in the theatre at 10:30am. We have a very full program so we ask that all students are seated ready to start at 10:30am.
Seating Arrangements
The Grade 6 students go to the back of the theatre
The Grade 7 students go up to the balcony
The Grade 8 students will sit in front. The Grade 8 classes will sit across the rows in the theatre in their home room groups starting with 8-1 in the first row
Grade 8 and Grade 6 students that are leaving ISB should sit on the end of a row for easy access to come up on the stage.
Those Grade 7 students who are leaving ISB should be down stairs waiting on the right hand side facing the stage.
All MS STUCO members should be downstairs waiting on the left hand side of the theatre facing the stage.

4 Types of Curtain Heading
The top part of the curtain, simply called the curtain heading, may not be as eye-catching to those who don’t know much about it but it still greatly impacts the vibe a curtain gives, and also its functionality. Learn more about the different types of curtain heading as you continue reading.

Tie Top
For the ultimate in shabby chic, use this heading treatment that says, “Old is new again.” Individual pieces of fabric attached to the top of the drapery create ties. Tie them over the drapery bar for that easygoing cottage look.

Rod Pocket Ruffles

Eyelet
Eyelet curtains are a great way to create a modern look, particularly at French windows or bi-fold doors, and hang in wide, loose folds. Available off the peg from the big high street retailers in a multitude of fabrics, eyelet curtains are suitable for poles only but are simple to hang as the big rings slot straight on. If you’re having them made, measure from the top of the pole to where you want the curtains to finish, adding 3cm for the space from the eyelet to the top of the curtain. Source: Saga

How do you deal with acoustics in buildings?
An acoustic engineer should be consulted for guidance on how to insulate building elements to achieve particular acoustic goals and to provide acoustic calculations. But here we will explain two important phenomenon that you may come across when dealing with building acoustics for particular elements: Rain Impact Noise and Airborne Sound Transmission.
Rain Impact Noise, measured in area-weighted sound intensity level LIA (dB), concerns the amount of direct impact sound transmitted from pouring rain falling onto the outside of a roof to the inside of a building. The lower the value, the better.
Airborne Sound Transmission, measured in area-weighted Sound Reduction Index Rw (dB), concerns the amount of direct sound transmitted from one room or building to another, or from outside to inside, via roofs, floors and walls. The higher the value, the better.
We’ve had a series of acoustic tests completed showing great results for rain impact noise with steel and timber deck flat roofs insulated with Kingspan Thermaroof products and Kingspan OPTIM-R Vacuum Insulation Panels. A test result of 27.5 LIA (dB) was achieved for a green roof build-up insulated with 100 mm Thermaroof TR26/TR27 LPC/FM. An assessed test result of 41.6 LIA (dB) was achieved for a metal deck flat roof build-up insulated with 100 mm Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM.
Acoustic tests were also completed for airborne sound transmission with steel and timber deck flat roofs insulated with Thermaroof products and OPTIM-R Vacuum Insulation Panels, and also steel frame walls insulated with Kingspan Kooltherm products. A test result of 47 Rw (dB) was achieved for a metal deck flat roof build-up insulated with 150 mm Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM. An assessed test result of 51 Rw (dB) was achieved for a metal deck flat roof build-up insulated with 60 mm Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM. A test result of 62 Rw (dB) was achieved for a steel frame wall build-up insulated with 60 mm Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board.

Top 2 Window Treatment Questions
Dressing your windows can be a bit trickier than other interior design projects because there are a surprising number of ways for window treatments to end up looking. In this short post we’ll cover some of the most common questions asked about window treatments.

What if I measure incorrectly?
It is very important that you take the extra time to measure your windows accurately. Make sure you take every measurement twice before recording your final result. One of the most common measuring errors is recording the width and height measurements in reverse order. The width is always the first measurement given and the height is always the second measurement. Click How-To-Measure to view our measuring instructions. If you follow these instructions carefully, your blinds should fit perfectly. If the measurement is only slightly off, sometimes the size can be altered by the manufacturer for a small charge. How long do window treatments last?
This depends on a lot of factors, but if you buy high-quality window treatments and you treat them correctly, there’s no reason they can’t last a lifetime. What is acoustics?
You may think that insulation is installed just to help with retaining heat or regulating temperatures, but it can also be useful in controlling the movement of sound in buildings.
Acoustics is a scientific term concerning the properties of sound.
A recent technical paper – Healthy Homes: Acoustics – and blog – Healthy Homes: Designing Out Excessive Noise – that can be found on the UK Green Building Council’s website highlight the ‘distress and health impacts of living in an excessively noisy environment’. Recent research shows that a high level of noise exposure poses a risk to hearing. Medium to low levels of noise exposure can lead to annoyance, activity disruption and sleep disturbance. Long-term noise exposure can increase the occurrence of heart disease and hypertension.
With the outcome of this research in mind, it is a good idea to consider insulating your own home to avoid excessive noise exposure, such as from neighbouring buildings or external noise. Within housing and apartments, it can simply be the annoyance of hearing next door’s TV blaring or a shower in use that you wish to reduce. But did you know that there are performance standards to adhere to when designing buildings? For example, Building Bulletin 93 for school buildings, Healthcare Technical Memorandum 08-01 for healthcare buildings, and building regulations outlined in Approved Document E for England and Wales and Technical Handbooks Section 5 for Scotland.
The performance standards mentioned above set internal sound pressure level requirements for typical room usage, among other acoustic requirements. The acoustic term for this is Equivalent Continuous Level, which is area-weighted sound pressure expressed as LAeq. Some rooms require a lower LAeq, like a music practice room or operating theatre, where high levels of concentration and low levels of disruption are needed, compared to a gym or canteen.
To meet a required LAeq the amount of external noise and Sound Reduction Index need to be assessed and calculated by an acoustic engineer. Sound Reduction Index is area-weighted to produce single number quantities and characterises the airborne sound insulation of a material or building element over a range of frequencies, expressed as Rw (dB).

Cambodia is such a majestic country. It’s filled with the remnants of the Khmer Empire, an immensely powerful rule back in the 802 CE. Their territory stretched from Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Southern Vietnam.
The Khmer Empire’s signature architecture is mostly seen in these countries, but it is in Cambodia where they placed their seat of power. But apart from the beautiful temple ruins, Cambodia also tells tales of gruesome stories that would leave you haunted and saddened.

People come here every now and then to relish the mystical vibe that the country has to offer, so for the purpose of knowing more about this country, here are the top 10 Go-to places here.
1. Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is one of the Seven Wonder’s of the World and perhaps is the most known landmark in this country. Its classic picture perfect temples are quite eye catching and lots of people have taken photographs of it countless of times for its sheer beauty. Many people are awe-struck with the well preserved structures, and others are quite amazed with the profound history that backs up the entire colossal monument that Angkor Wat is. Angkor Wat is something that you would never miss to see while in this country.
2. Angkor Thom

Like Angkor Wat, it was also the Capital of the Khmer Empire. To be more precise, it was the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Much like the Angkor Wat, its stand out architecture and chiseled stone sculptures are quite astounding to look at. This is a huge complex housing iconic structures such as the Bayon Temple, the 54 Gods and the 54 Demons, the Terrace of Elephants and the Baphuon.
3. National Museum of Cambodia

Every country has their story and what better way to get to know their history than visiting the National Museums. Cambodia’s National Museum has a wide collection of Pre-historic and Khmer artifacts. Most of these materials are of ceramic and bronze.
4. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Most people would describe this place as a disturbing but moving place. It was a former high school turned into a torture camp by the Khmer Rouge. 14 000 people were held captive here and only 7 survived of them came out alive. The gruesome history of the place is ironically the most attracting factor of this place.
5. The Killing Fields

As mentioned earlier, Cambodia does have a horrendous history especially during the Khmer Rouge. One of the places where you’d get to see this fact unfold is through the Killing Fields. Locally referred to as Wat Thmey, The Killing Fields is named for being an execution area for the captives held in Tuol Sleng. The small area features a memorial for those who have died in these fields. A small structure with glass and inscriptions that houses some of the vicitims here could be found in this place.
6. Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is probably one of the most iconic places in Phnom Penh. It is the residence of his Majesty Preah Bat smdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and Her Majesty Preah Reach Akka-Mohesey Norodom Monineath .It’s golden roof with the signature pointy ends is something you most definitely would not miss. Visiting the Royal Palace would give you a glimpse of the spectacular artifacts, a taste of Cambodia’s culture, and a piece of the country’s history.
7. Silver Pagoda
It’s really quite astounding how there are so many iconic structures there are in Phnom Penh alone. Joining that list would be the Silver Pagoda. It got its interesting moniker from the fact that the floor of the temple is covered with at least 5000 tiles made from silver. Other attractions here are the Emerald Buddha, the ashes of Buddha, and tons of paintings.
8. Bantay Srei

The Bantay Srei literelly translates to “Citadel of Women” and it was said that women carved the stone sculptures engraved on the walls of this temple. The superbly intricate details of the carvings would tell you of the old Hindu tales, so it would be great to have some tour guide tell you more about it.
9. Sihanoukville

Now if you think that Cambodia is nothing more but a Temple Capital of the world, well think again, because there’s a part of this country called Sihanoukville where you could bathe under the sun and enjoy the relaxing sound of the waves and the refreshing waters of the sea. It’s got white sands, and pristine spots that are mostly undeveloped.
10. Koh Ker
If you think that you can only find pyramids in Egypt and in Maya’s, Aztecs’, and Incas’ territories then I am afraid you are mistaken, because in Cambodia, you get to see Koh Ker. It was once a capital of the Khmer Empire like that of the Angkor Wat, but it was only for a brief time. The pyramid here is Prasat Thom which is about 30 meters in height, towering the entire landscape of the area.

What is an exposed perimeter?
…And how do I work it out?
When trying to identify the thickness of insulation required to insulate a floor, many of us are faced with the onerous task of calculating the perimeter / area (P/A) ratio.
While establishing the area of a floor is fairly straightforward, identifying the exposed perimeter can cause quite a lot of confusion:
- “What is it?”
- “Does this wall count?”
- “What if it’s next to my garage?”
Hopefully by the end of this short guide, understanding and calculating the P/A ratio, or more specifically the exposed perimeter for your floor, will become somewhat of a walk in the park.
The exposed perimeter is essentially the total length of all exposed walls surrounding the floor you are proposing to insulate. This includes externally exposed walls and walls adjacent to an internal unheated space. Unlike the total floor perimeter, the exposed perimeter focuses solely on the edges where heat loss would occur.
For example, if you were to imagine the diagram below resembled your home, and you were looking to insulate the living room, the sum of edges A, B, C and D would make up the total perimeter of the living room. In comparison the sum of edges A, B and C, which are all either externally exposed to the outside elements or to the unheated garage, would make up the exposed perimeter measurement.
This figure when divided by the given floor area will provide you with a P/A ratio, which contributes in identifying the required thickness of insulation to achieve your target thermal performance.

Spring Break in Paris

During spring break, more than a dozen International School of Beijing (ISB) high school French learners were immersed in Parisian culture.
Paris: home to the Tour Eiffel – that's how many people tend to see it. However, Paris is more than the first monument that comes to mind; it is a multidimensional city of flourishing culture. The Champs-Elysées, Notre Dame, and Arc de Triomphe were understandably packed with tourists of all nationalities. These monuments were only the tip of the iceberg, with many more museums and masterpieces packed into our busy schedules. After all, they are a couple of the most well-known monuments in the world. Fortunately, we did more than just skim the surface of this beautiful city.
From strolling the streets of the 14th district to buying secondhand books at a streetside vendor, we had an authentic Parisian experience. Daily lessons in the mornings with local French teachers were accompanied by eye-opening experiences in the evening, such as cooking traditional French cuisine with professional chefs. Perhaps the most enchanting experience of all was the Bateaux Mouches!
Being able to view Paris on one of the most famous rivers in the world was amazing. Together, we got to witness the stunning sunset and the shining city lights. The already-alluring Tour Eiffel was ablaze with golden light and the Pont Neuf was as majestic as our elementary school teachers made it sound. Due to the regular need for communication with the locals in their native language, our understanding of the culture and language expanded in a way that would be impossible from our classrooms, thousands of miles away.
Having had the opportunity to experience Paris from both a touristic and local point of view, the city simply became more captivating. Our internationally-based lessons at ISB gave us the chance to appreciate this city so much more, desperate to finally live through all these experiences we hear of in the classrooms.
Overall, the trip was as exciting as anticipated. If you're planning to visit Paris this summer, we strongly suggest the Musée d'Orsay, the Louvre, and Sainte Chapelle. Oh, and don't forget to clear your phone storage space! Trust us – you'll need it!
Paris - la ville d'amour. C'est comme ça que la grande majorité des gens la voient. En réalité, Paris est beaucoup plus qu'une ville avec beaucoup de monuments célèbres. C'est une ville de culture immense, avec pleins d'histoires et d'aspects fascinants, remplis de touristes venus du monde entier,se pressant sur les Champs-Élysées, devant la cathédrale de Notre Dame et bien sûr à l'Arc de Triomphe.
Déambulant du quatorzième arrondissement où nous avons séjourné jusqu'au cœur de Paris , marchant sur les boulevards chaque jour, nous étions biens épuisés mais cultivés ! Chaque matin, nous avons eu des cours de français avec une prof de la célèbre université de la Sorbonne, puis chaque soir, nous avons fait des activités variées comme une croisière en Bateau Mouche, ou la préparation de plats traditionnels français avec des chefs professionnels.
Tous ensemble, nous avons eu le plaisir d'être témoin de superbes couchers de soleil sur la ville -lumière. La Tour Eiffel brillait de mille feux, et le Pont Neuf était aussi impressionnant que nos guides et professeurs nous l'avaient dit . Parce que nous devions communiquer avec des Parisiens dans leur langue - le français - notre compréhension de la culture et de la langue s'est étendue bien au-delà des murs de notre salle de classe, située à des milliers de kilomètres...
Avoir la chance de découvrir Paris sur le plan touristique et culturel a rendu la ville encore plus captivante. Nous avons pu mettre en pratique toutes les connaissances apprises dans nos classes, et faire enfin la rencontre de cette ville vraiment magique.
Au final , notre voyage s'est avéré aussi incroyable qu'à la hauteur de nos attentes.
Si vous pensez aller à Paris cet été, on vous suggère de visiter le Musée D'Orsay, le Louvre et la Sainte- Chapelle.
