3 Curtain Rod Alternatives

From time to time, it’s good to change things up a bit. Instead of going with a traditional curtain rod, why not try one of the following alternatives for a more creative option?

Rod-Free Curtains
Curtains don’t have to be hung with rods. Instead of using a store-bought or homemade rod, hammer a line of nails across arched and straight windows. Evenly space the nails and paint them to match the walls or the curtains. Once the paint is dry, loop the curtains over the nails or hang them with ribbons or large hooks. Another unique option is to space old door or cabinet knobs about 12 inches apart along the top of the window; use wood screws or nails to secure them in place. Cut holes in the curtains or use tab top panels and loop them over the knobs. If you’re using brass or metal knobs, paint them to ensure that the curtains won’t be stained should the knobs tarnish. Coat Hangers
You can use coat hangers as another alternative for curtain rods. Put the coat hooks on the window frames. You can simply attach the curtain to the rods. Or, if you want something really eye-catching, you can use a ribbon to tie the openings of the curtain to the rod. This will add a whimsy appeal to your curtains. This style goes best in the living room or children’s room. You can even paint the coat hangers to make it stand out or blend with the colors of the walls. Source: DoItYourself

Branching Out
Sometimes the perfect object for a lightweight drapery rod may be sitting right outside your window. Branches can make for excellent, sculptural drapery rods with a few simple do-it-yourself updates. Search for a branch with the proper length and width to fit above a window and handle the weight of the chosen drapery panel. Next, cut it to size and spray-paint it in a color which contrasts well against the wall. Lastly, secure standoffs, ready-made drapery rod brackets or L-brackets directly to the wall using plastic drywall anchors, then attach the branch with screws or bailing wire. Source: HGTV

Safe Won’t Open? What To Do When You Are Locked Out Of Your Safe

When a safe won’t open, it could be for any number of reasons. But the goal is always the same. You need to know what to do to get back inside your locked safe. There are many things that people don’t know about safes, but the what you can do when your safe won’t open always remains the same. There is a bit of information that you will need to gather so that you are better prepared to regain access to your locked safe. And at any point, you can choose to call a locksmith to assist you. But here is what you need to do when you are locked out of your safe.

Determine Your Type of Safe

Knowing what type of safe you have is incredibly important to finding out what your next step is. In cases where you are looking to open your locked safe yourself, you can’t find the relevant information when all you know is, “my safe won’t open”. If you know the brand name, even this can help you when you’re locked out of your safe.

The brand name of the safe is often quite easy to find. Most likely there will be a company logo on the front door of the safe. However, sometimes the logo will not include the name of the manufacturer, instead, it may just have some form of decal or illustration. But most will have large painted letters spelling out the company’s name.

If your safe won’t open, and there is no clear brand name, the next step is to look for any type of purchasing information. If that cannot be found, you can take a look at the type of construction and size of the safe. There is a chance that a safe won’t open is not a safe at all, rather it is a lockbox. Lockboxes and safes are two different devices, but either can be accessed by a professional.

This leads me to the final bit of advice. If you do not know what type of safe you are dealing with, call a safe locksmith. Just tell them that, “my safe won’t open”, and your job is as good as done. They will diagnose the issue and make sure that you are not locked out of your safe a moment longer than necessary.

Why Are You Locked Out?

Locked Out Of Safe

Sure, your safe won’t open, but that is the symptom, not the diagnoses. In order to get back into your locked safe, the precise nature of the safe lockout has to be uncovered. A professional will, of course, be able to tell you why your safe won’t open. However, if you are looking to find out for yourself, you may need to troubleshoot the issue.

The reason may be quite straightforward. If the safe uses a key, and you broke the key off in the lock, all you need to do is remove the broken key. After that, you will most likely need to have a new key made in order to see if the safe won’t open still. Or perhaps your electronic lock ran out of batteries and you cannot use the code to open it.

Similarly, if you know that you have forgotten the combination or code to the safe, then you know your safe won’t open. In cases like this, you can check the safe literature to see if there is a reset code that you can perform without opening the safe. The chances of this are slim, and if this method entry works, you should look into getting a more secure safe. In the likely chance that your safe won’t open by these means, there will be more work to be done.

Other issues such as detached bolt work, or jammed internals, can be assessed when you try to move the safe handle to unlock the device. You know the safe won’t open, but if the handle spins like it should, then there is an issue with the bolt work of the door. The bolts may also be jammed if the handle will just not move far enough, but does still move.

Safe Bouncing

If you have made the mistake of purchasing a substandard safe from any of the companies that security experts don’t recommend, or invested in a product that is fire resistant but not burglary resistant, you may be able to bounce your safe. If your cheaply built safe won’t open by the proper means, it may still open this way. Look at the different types of safes, to get a better idea of what type of protection you have.

This method of entry is the most basic form of safe entry, but it can only be used on safes with functioning bolt work. If your safe won’t open, due to an issue with you forgetting or not having access to the combination, a broken key, or a battery that has died in your digital lock, then it can be assumed that your bolt construction is intact.

To bounce a safe, you simply strike the top of vault while turning the handle simultaneously. This act works similarly to a bump key. The internal components of the locking mechanism are temporarily oriented to their proper opening position, as the bolt work in the door jumps from the sudden impact. This is not a professional method of entry, but it does take some practice. However, if the safe won’t open, then it may be too heavy or too well made. (This is a good thing.)

Lock Overrides

Overrides are installed very frequently in smaller safes with electronic keypads. If your safe is the type of product that you would see used as a hotel safe, then there is a good chance that there is an override procedure. The reason for this is that these safes are intended to have their combinations reset. As a result, many motels and hotels have to be able to get inside when a safe won’t open because a guest forgot to leave the door ajar.

Often there is a factory code that comes standard to reset these types of safes without the need to open them. The most common combination is repetitive zeros, the number of which varies, but is often the same number as the safe’s standard combination length. With nothing more than the manufacture, it is often easy to find this information. If the safe won’t open with the information you get, be sure that you have the right model number. If you do, then there is a chance that the override code has been changed on your device.

Other than code based pre-installed overrides, there may also be openings on the bottom of the safe if it was not bolted down using every pre-drilled hole. With most electronic safes, there will be a switch on the inside of the door that when flipped, allows the combination to be reset. If you can flip this switch, you can simply reset the combination. Of course, this method can be a little difficult without locksmith tools, such as a borescope. If a safe won’t open due to a dead battery, this will not work.

Manipulation

Safe manipulation is the type of safe cracking that you see in movies when a safe won’t open. Where a suave gentleman in a black turtleneck will hold his ear to a safe and spin the dial, opening the lock with nothing but his bare hands and a bit of finesse. Unlike in movies, it is less about having a stethoscope, and more about knowledge, practice, and natural talent. This is not a way that you can get back into your own safe unless you are highly trained. And chances are if you have read this far, you are not.

But don’t be discouraged. A professional locksmith can still open your safe this way (as long as there is a combination dial). Manual combination locks are the type of locking mechanism that can be manipulated without harming the safe. This will be necessary if you have purchased a safe or vault from any of the best safe companies. But there are forms of manipulation for a when a safe won’t open and simple touch-based manipulation is not enough.

These will harm the safe, but not in a way that demands replacing the device. In cases that demand more serious techniques, a hole will have to be drilled in the safe. Tools and probes will then be inserted to manipulate the bolt work or locking mechanism of the safe door. Of course, a safe accessed in the following way (or by similar methods) will no longer be as secure as it was. But most people will still not be able to exploit the safe via this new hole. And the hole will almost be slightly obscured. If anyone was looking to open your safe illegally in this way, they have only been saved the time it would have taken to drill the hole.

Violent Entry

In cases when you are saying, “My safe won’t open, and I need to get in now!”, you probably do not have time for the more delicate methods. In this case, you may need to subject your safe to violent entry. These ways of getting in when a safe won’t open, compromise the safe far too much to continue using it after the device is opened.

Another reason that the safe may need violent entry, is because the safe won’t open because it is far too broken. Sometimes a safe won’t open, and it is not going to open without being taken apart.

It is of the utmost importance that you do not attempt to use any form of violent entry yourself. These methods may appear to be rather basic, but the use of these tools can be dangerous if you do not understand the construction of your safe. People that try to break in when their safe won’t open by force can severely injure themselves. Leave this work to the professionals.

Conclusion

Now that you know what you can do when you are locked out of your safe, you will never need to say, “My safe won’t open.” You will just be able to go about fixing the issue. Never hesitate in any step of the process to reach out to a locksmith. If ever your safe won’t open, there is always someone ready to help. Feel free to call United Locksmith if you need any assistance with opening your safe. We’ll get the job done!

Smart Locks vs Traditional Locks: What’s More Secure?

Locks have been a staple of homes, and the foundation of home security for centuries. They tend to be taken for granted, and it seems that locks have faded gradually into the background of security, even though they still hold a great amount of significance. Many people don’t realize how much of an impact their locks have until they are either locked out, or they find themselves unable to lock their residential doors, office doors, or car doors. Locks are important because they provide the cornerstone for security.

Imagine, if there were no locks in place in our society. A stranger could easily walk in off the street and make their way into your home. Locks are also meant to ensure privacy and restrict unauthorized access to certain areas. There is a lock on almost everything from doors to cell phones. This is because of how much the world has come to value privacy. Therefore, knowing which lock is right for you is important, because we don’t want you lost in home depot choosing the wrong lock.

Technology has done a lot of good for the world, and it even makes some of the most complicated tasks easier than ever to complete. This same driving force that birthed a generation of smart locks that many homeowners have fallen in love with. Smart locks promised to revolutionize the way people looked at locks because they allowed you to accomplish much more than what a regular lock could. They allowed you to control your home in ways homeowners never had. The main reason why smart locks seem so appealing to many homeowners is because it allows them to complete more actions with less work.

However, even though there are so many homeowners that are enamored with these smart locks, there are also a great deal of homeowners that believe that smart locks are not secure enough to protect their families. It is hard to declare any of these locks the better option without taking an in-depth look at them first. This is because there are many variants of each of these locks, and one might suit your lifestyle or door better than the other. In order to determine which of these locks might be more secure, let’s first look at the basic functions and attributes of each of these locks. Then we will take a more in-depth look at the differences.

What are traditional locks?

Traditional Locks

The term ‘traditional locks’ is not something that many people are used to hearing. Granted, there are many different types of regular locks that are not automated, but up until smart locks carved out space for themselves, these old locks were just called locks. There are many variations of traditional locks, which can be used for a plethora of purposes. The term is essentially referring to locks that are not automated and locks that have to be manually engaged in order for the locking mechanism to be operated.

In the context of this article, the main focus will be on locks that can be used in either residential spaces or for commercial purposes. These more traditional locks range between deadbolt locks, mortise locks, knob locks, and a host of other variations. Most of these locking mechanisms are either engaged by the turn of a key, the twist of a thumb turn, or the push of a button. Either way, they are engaged manually and will also need to be manually operated in order to disengage the locking mechanism.

How do traditional locks work?

The majority of traditional locks work when a key is used to activate the locking mechanism, which will give it the ability to lock or unlock. Some very common examples of these traditional locks are pin tumbler locks, rim locks, and mortise locks. Let’s take a look at the pin-tumbler lock for example.

Pin-Tumbler locks are some of the most common locks used within residential properties. The locking mechanism in these locks features a series of spring-loaded pins that are in turn loaded into cylinders. The cylinders consist of a set of pins that are designated as the key pins and the driver pins. When the correct key is inserted into the locking mechanism the key pins are elevated, which pushes the driver pins upward.

Once the proper key is inserted into the lock, the driver pins and key pins align at the shear line. Then the key can be turned in the lock, to unlock, and sometimes lock, the mechanism. If the wrong key is used, the misalignment of the pins will block the key from being turned because the pins will be bound at the shear line.

How secure are traditional locks?

This is not an easy question to answer, and that is due to the number of lock variations that homeowners utilize. The security levels that these locks give homeowners varies. For instance, the deadbolt is one of the most common exterior residential locks. There are usually two main types of deadbolts, single cylinder deadbolts, and double cylinder deadbolts. These locks are known to provide maximum security for homeowners but only if the right ones are used and if they are used in the right way.

Deadbolts are grouped according to grades that determine their relative strength. These grades are usually based on the relative strength, longevity, and durability of these locks. They range from 3 to 1, with 3 being the lowest grade and 1 being the highest grade. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Grade 1 deadbolts provide homeowners with the maximum security for their residential locks. However, the thing that allows these locks to be as secure as they are, are the additions that can be made to ensure that they are as secure as possible.

Traditional locks can usually be enhanced by using solid metal strike plates and longer deadbolt throws. You can also invest in locks that are resistant to lock picking, lock bumping, and other bypass methods. In addition to these methods, homeowners can make their locks stronger by using security pins within the lock cylinder itself that will make it much harder for anyone to tamper with.

In order to determine how secure a traditional lock will be, a number of factors have to be taken into consideration. These factors include the placement of the lock, how often the lock will be used, as well as whether or not this lock is meant to function alone. Let’s break these points down.

Locks that are meant to be used primarily for exterior doors will function best when they are placed on exterior doors, but they will also work well for interior doors (bathrooms, closets etc). Although installing a Grade 1 deadbolt on your bathroom door is overkill. However, looking at the opposite spectrum of things, if you install a knob lock on your front door (without adding a deadbolt to it), then you are leaving your home vulnerable to attacks and burglars.

Also, the continued strength of your lock will depend on how frequently it is being used. If a homeowner uses a Grade 2 or Grade 3 deadbolt for an interior door that does not get used often, this will not likely develop into a security hazard. However, if they use a Grade 3 deadbolt, on the front door of their home, which sees a considerable amount of daily traffic, then there is a flaw in their security that can be exploited.

In effect, traditional locks are pretty secure if they are used in the right way, and if homeowners have them installed with security in mind. In order to do this, it is best to consult with a professional residential locksmith who has knowledge and foresight that will help homeowners get the best out of their locks.

What are smart locks?

Smart Lock

In their simplest form, smart locks are automated versions of traditional locks. In most cases, a smart lock will make use of the traditional lock mechanism, but the lock mechanism can be engaged electronically or remotely. These locks are different because they require a different interaction (between the user and the lock) than traditional locks. The name ‘smart locks’ also stems from their ability to be controlled and operated by smartphones, as well as their ability to integrate with other smart devices.

These locks allow homeowners to control and monitor their locks in a way that traditional locks do not. If the smart locks are working the way it is intended to, it provides unparalleled ease of access and comfort. However, this does not always mean it is the most secure option. Smart lock manufacturers tend to focus more on the efficiency and added features that the lock brings to the table, which makes them skimp on the security factors that have made locks a hallmark for every home.

How do smart locks work?

Smart locks, much like traditional locks, require a lock and a key in order to work properly. A smart lock has to receive its operational instructions from a pre-authorized device, as well as a cryptographic key in order for it to perform its locking and unlocking process. In addition to this, smart locks are also able to monitor the status of the lock and send pertinent alerts to authorized devices. In most cases, this would be the homeowner’s smartphone. These locks are considered to be a huge part of the smart home, and they are capable of integration with many other smart devices and products.

The key for smart locks is not a physical key as it is for traditional locks. These keys are either special key fobs or a set of instructions issued by home automation protocol, which will authenticate that it is the proper key for the lock. Some smart locks also have the ability to hand out temporary keys to third parties, and these temporary keys function as spare keys.

How secure are smart locks?

The security of smart locks has been in question since before their inception. It did not become apparent to many people that this was even an issue until after homeowner’s started to acquire smart locks. This might have been because smart locks were not necessarily advertised for their security capabilities, but they were marketed by talking about all the new and cool things that a smart lock could do for an individual’s home. For instance, some smart locks give homeowners the ability to remotely monitor the status of their locks, as well as remotely operate their locks. These features are some of the things that make a smart lock truly unique and the reasons why some people flocked to them.

However, the issue of smart lock security was one that gradually made its way to the foreground of the conversation. Smart locks made little architectural improvements to the basic design and components of traditional locks, so they each essentially start out on the same security threshold (in most cases). In this sense, most people would think that their smart locks are better than their traditional locks because they are being afforded the same level of security with added features, but this isn’t always the case.

Most smart locks will work with an existing deadbolt, which does imply that they are offering a much more secure lock than if you were to use a Euro Cylinder lock on your front door. Though this might be better, there is a drawback to this. Due to the specific nature in which smart locks are designed, it is hard to make additions to them. A perfect example is the August Smart Lock, which can only work with thumb turn deadbolts and will not work with double cylinder deadbolts. Another example is the Kevo Kwikset, which comes with its own hardware (lock cylinder, interior set up, etc.) and is meant to replace whatever hardware a homeowner had in place.

With a regular traditional lock, homeowners can make modifications and additions that will ensure the lock is more secure. Without any security additions, most of these smart locks are vulnerable to simple bypass methods that anyone with the right training and practice could easily exploit. The lock cylinder in the Kevo, for example, is notoriously easy to bypass. Essentially, given enough time and with enough knowledge about a lock, every lock can be picked, but you want to make sure that your lock is extremely hard to bypass.

Aside from the physical aspect of smart locks, many people have expressed concern with the other security doors that it opens up. Traditional locks only needed to be bypassed on one front, which is the physical side. If you are able to tamper with the physical aspects of any lock long enough, you will have a good chance at bypassing its security. With smart locks, physical security isn’t the only thing that a homeowner will have to worry about. The cyber aspect of smart locks makes them vulnerable to external cyber attacks, which is something that traditional locks never had to deal with.

Cyber attacks on smart locks have become more common, and many smart lock manufacturers have found themselves scrambling to try and deal with the blowback of smart locks being hacked. These cyber attacks can be executed by gaining direct access to the lock or by gaining access to the network that the lock is on. This presents a new realm of vulnerabilities that homeowners were not exposed to before. Cyber attacks put personal data, confidential information and other important aspects of an individual’s life at risk. In most cases, a homeowner that owns a smart lock will most likely have one or two more smart devices that are being used in conjunction with their smart lock. If the smart lock is breached, it tends to put your entire home security network at risk.

There are measures that people can take to make sure that it is harder for a burglar or criminal to hack their smart lock and their smart devices. This normally means that they will have to invest in new equipment to bolster the security of their smart lock. These measures range from investing in a high-security firewall for your home network to making sure that your network passwords and access codes are regularly changed.

Verdict

In my opinion, I would say that at this point in time, traditional locks are much more secure than smart locks. Traditional locks have been tried and tested over years of use, which makes it easier for homeowners to gravitate towards the lock brands they trust. This has given manufacturers the ability to make locks stronger and better, as well as more resistant to anything that a burglar might throw at it. In addition to this, homeowners can make modifications and additions to their locks that make them stronger. For instance, they can add security pins, make the deadbolt longer, use longer screws to install the lock to make it more resistant to blunt force trauma, etc.

Smart Locks, on the other hand, have been around for just a short amount of time and within that amount of time, their flaws have greatly outshone their benefits. This is not to say that these locks are not good, they are, but they focus more on convenience, integration, and ease of use rather than security. In doing so, they neglect the primary objective of any lock because they are focused so heavily on making its secondary features appealing. In addition to this, smart locks have also added a new layer of vulnerability that traditional locks never had to deal with, which is the cyber threat that smart locks face. This inherently means that smart locks have to be fighting the security battle on two fronts, the physical end, and the cyber end. As of now, this is not something that they have handled all too well.

Ultimate List of Best Hotels and Resorts in Panglao Island, Bohol

Final Friday Five

February – it’s the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on! See below for our round up of the best articles from the past month…

Fixing our broken housing market

Earlier this month the government announced its plans to ‘fix the broken housing market’ and build more homes across England. This included a series of measures to build homes in the right places, to speed up house building and to help diversify the housing market.

While this is entirely a step in the right direction, we’ve also called for better, more efficient homes, to ensure that properties are built with residents and the future in mind.

Download the government’s white paper here, and read our response here.

The Sustainability Ocsars 2017

It’s awards season! While most of us are waiting to see whether La La Land sweeps this year’s Academy Awards, edie.net has put together its own list to celebrate the very best of climate-change cinema.

The list includes everything from Disney favourite Moana (which shoes how dependent some communities are on the surrounding environment) to Leonardo DiCaprio for his ‘Before the Flood’ documentary.

No surprise as to who won the Lifetime Achievement Award…!

Take a look for yourself here.

SEA elects new Chair of Executive Committee

On that note, we’re incredibly pleased that our very own Richard Burnley has been elected Chair of the Sustainable Energy Association (SEA) Executive Committee.

Richard commented:  I’m delighted to take up this role and look forward to working with the SEA team to continue to shape the future policy framework.

You can read his full statement here.

Box set binge spawns 3D plans of TV shows

Do you just love The US Office? If so, you’ll feel like you know Dunder Mifflin like the back of your hand.

And any Mad Men fans will have seen Don Draper walking through Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce countless times.

These are just two of the fictional environments that have been recreated as 3D plans by Drawbotics. The team spent hours binge-watching their favourite TV shows, before recreating authentic floor plans each fictitious office. (Sounds like a pretty good weeks’ work to us…!)

You can see these here.

3 More Window Treatments for Sliding Glass Doors

Choosing a window treatment for a sliding glass door can be a challenge because you don’t want to hinder the usefulness of the door. Consider these 3 common window treatments as you dress up your sliding door.

Vertical Blinds
Sliding door blinds are the most common window treatments and provide the best solution for privacy concerns in a home where sliding doors and French doors are used. Sliding doors are attractive and efficient, but they need to come with the proper kind of treatment to preserve privacy and filter sunlight.
But choosing the wrong kind of blinds can ruin the beauty and efficiency of a sliding door. So in order to keep this from happening, you need to know the different choices you have when it comes to sliding door blinds. Sometimes having tons of choices can be overwhelming, but it is a blessing in this case if you know what options you have.
Blinds are commonly made of PVC plastic, Faux Wood, Real, Wood, and Fabric. They are constructed using slats or vanes that can be adjusted using a cord, a wand, or a remote control. Their slats slightly overlap, making the blinds and shades very easily adjustable. Because they are easily adjustable, blinds can provide privacy whenever you want it. You can also control the amount of light that can get in your home. Source: DecorSnob

Side-Mounted Panels
Purely decorative treatments, such as these side-mounted panels, are perfect for sliders that receive constant use or that frame unbeatable vistas so the view remains barrier-free. The panels don’t move, so go ahead and mount the rods out of reach (these are positioned 12 inches above the top of the door’s frame) for a design trick that visually adds height to a low ceiling. Source: BHG

Privacy Sheers
If you are looking for a classical, elegant look, Luminette Privacy Sheers are a good choice. The sheer facing resembles traditional sheer draperies, while the 180-degree rotating vertical fabric vanes give you complete control over light and privacy to create the perfect ambiance you desire. Codelympians

Hello world. Codelympians is a competitive programming club where students will be able compete with each other and even attend competitive events. With so many software companies and motivated programmers competing against each other, this is a great way to prepare for the "real world" competition in the future. Competitive events that we will attend include game jams and hackathons, both of which are events in which groups of people compete in creating the most interesting games or solving algorithmic challenges in a set period of time. Sounds cool? Please contact Andrew Liu (andy.liu@student.isb.bj.edu.cn) or Tom Jiao (tom.jiao@student.isb.bj.edu.cn) if you are interested in joining. You can attend our meetings on Thursdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 in room 1733.

Internal wall insulation – Passivhaus

How can you express your undying devotion for the building in your life this Valentine’s week?

Whilst some will opt for showy expressions of affection, such as a new extension or bathroom refit, if you really want to make a lasting impact the best option may be a Passivhaus refurbishment.

The Passivhaus Standard is widely recognised as one of the top energy performance standards in the world. It sets clear and demanding requirements for both the thermal performance and airtightness of the building envelope. This fabric-focused approach offers an opportunity to view the full potential of internal wall insulation (IWI) applications.

Lena Gardens

Lena Gardens is a truly ground-breaking project and was only the second UK retrofit to be successfully certified to the full Passivhaus standard. The three-storey Victorian terrace presented a wide range of challenges for designers – Princedale Homes and Green Tomato Energy. The solid walled building is located within a Hammersmith conservation area meaning all air-tightening measures and insulation had to be fitted internally. As with many older properties, the building also features an irregular internal layout further complicating the installation.

To overcome these obstacles the design team developed many novel approaches and systems, paying considerable attention to the detailing and installation of the insulation and airtightness layers.

Walls

One of the most radical changes to the property was the decision to rehang all floor joists inside the thermal envelope. This allowed the IWI to be fitted against the external walls in a continuous layer, effectively eliminating a potential source of air loss and thermal bridging.

On the external walls 130 mm and 50 mm thicknesses of premium performance phenolic insulation framing board were fitted, achieving an outstanding U-value of 0.10 W/m2.K.  A further 50 mm layer of phenolic framing board was also installed on all party walls to prevent heat loss through to neighbouring properties.

To keep air-leakage levels within the Passivhaus limit (0.6 m3/hr/m2 at 50 Pa) a continuous layer of oriented strand board (OSB) was installed on all external and party walls, along with the roof and lower floor. Airtight tape was then applied to all junctions to seal the envelope.

Triple glazed sash imitation windows were used to replace the original windows. The design takes advantage of the period sash boxes, originally used to conceal the counterweights for the sash windows, by filling them with phenolic framing board – minimising thermal bridging. The window frames were also taped to the OSB layer to ensure an airtight seal.

Roofs

The property features a pitched roof over the main terrace house and flat roofing over the rear kitchen extension. 130 mm of phenolic pitched roof board was installed between the rafters of each board, followed by the OSB layer and a second 50 mm layer of phenolic insulation.  The finished roofs achieved U-values of 0.14 W/m2.K.

Floors

Three different build-ups were used to reduce heat-loss through the ground and basement floors.

Under the basement floor a ground-to-air heat exchanger was installed. 150 mm of high performance PIR floor insulation was then installed over the heat exchanger and beneath a floating plywood floor, achieving a U-value of 0.14 W/m2.K

For the suspended floor alongside the basement, the floor joists were lowered to allow the installation of 200 mm PIR floor insulation above the joists.

In the ground floor kitchen, the original concrete floor slab was removed and 150 mm of PIR floor insulation was installed over the compacted hardcore.  A further 150 mm concrete slab was then installed above this. The latter two constructions both achieved U-values of 0.11 W/m2.K

Ventilation

The high level of airtightness within Passivhaus buildings necessitates the use of mechanical ventilation. A Genex Combi 185L unit, featuring a heat recovery efficiency of 76%, was installed within the basement. A ductwork system then provided distribution. Internal intrusion within the house from the ductwork system was minimised by using floor and ceiling grids and keeping the ductwork within floor voids and stud walls, where possible.

Performance

Initial performance testing showed that metered energy consumption had fallen to  around 10% of the previous level. The performance test values suggest that the actual specific primary energy demand is nearer two-thirds of the predicted demand (54.8 kWh/m2a compared with the predicted 72 kWh/m2a). Gas usage is now reduced to insignificant amounts used solely for cooking, and the house now needs less than 15 kWh per m2 of energy to be heated annually, far lower than the UK single family home average of 130 kWh per m2.

There are many benefits to upgrading the thermal performance of buildings, and the success of the Lena Gardens project demonstrates that with careful planning and detailing, it is possible to transform the energy performance of even the most challenging properties.

10 Strange Locks You Never Knew Existed

We have compiled this list of the 10 weirdest locks that the world has to offer. These are real devices that you or the citizens of history could have used to protect their valuables. There is a veritable smorgasbord of diverse locks on this list. Everything from locks that are centuries old to technology that has just been released in the past year. Some of these designs are puzzling, and others are actually puzzles. These locks are so weird that they cannot be understood with just a picture. To really comprehend what is happening with this unique contraptions, you need a video and some explanation. So without further adieu, here are 10 of the weirdest locks we found.

10. Arvind Padlock

This Indian made padlock requires the users to know a couple tricks in order to open it. A bolt must be backed out of the lock body, and the keyway cover needs to be rotated to the 9 o’clock position. After all of that finagling, the key will still need to be inserted. The lock internals use a lever system, which can vary in quality depending on the manufacturer, but picking it will do you no good without first preparing the keyway. The practicality is not great because of necessary access to the back of the lock needed to unscrew the rounded bolt. Also, the cover for the keyway is elevated quite a bit off of the lock body, so it will not be keeping all of the dirt and grime out. It is definitely more wacky than practical.

9. Dumbbell Lock

Just by looking at this lock, you know that it is something weird. The shape of the device is what gives it the name “Dumbbell Lock”. It does not look all that practical due to its size, but it can be used in several ways. Just like any other padlock, you can place it through a hasp or a chain. With the appropriately sized doorknobs, you would even be able to hold a pair of double doors closed. The sheer size of this particular dumbbell lock would also lend itself to be used as wheel lock for your motorcycle. In terms of the keyway, it is also very weird. The 5 sided Judo keyhole puts it outside of the standard oddity of cross locks. Sure it can be picked, but it has a whole lot of weirdness to offer the world.

8. Nokē

The NokÄ“ padlock is a fully keyless lock. The company was so proud of this fact that they named their product NokÄ“, which is pronounced as “No Key”. So how do you open it? Well, it can be opened with a smartphone or tablet. With Bluetooth signaling and a downloadable app, you will never be looking for your key again. But smart locks aren’t that weird. What is truly strange about this lock is the fact that it can be set to open with morse code. Press down the shackle with differentiated short and long applications of pressure, and your lock will open right up. There is no key override of the lock, but there is a port at the bottom. This can be used to jumpstart the lock when the battery has died by touching a new battery against the terminal. You may also think that it is magnetic because there are no visible cutouts on the open shackle. But it does use ball bearings (so it cannot be shimmed), the locking dog is just so far down in the body that the cut in the shackle is imperceptible.

7. Lily Water Padlock

These Lily Water padlocks have all kinds of interesting body shapes, but the truly weird part about them is their keyway. It is a cruciform type four-way pattern, with a distinct bend on each of the side holes. Though the keyway has a kind of pinwheel shape now, originally those soft curves where hard angles. This gave the lock a swastika-shaped keyway, which in the Buddhist and Hindu markets that it was intended for simply meant “all” or “eternity” in Sanskrit. (In the video the swastika-shaped keyway is what the speaker is talking about when he says, “…another padlock with a little bit different keyway I can certainly not do a video about that because it would be against German law”). Not only is it weird for its unintentional offense, but the lock uses a simple system instead of the basic cruciform style pin tumbler. This results in a weird looking key that ends up looking like a drill bit. Also, the key can only be inserted one way. That means that all of the pins are active.

6. Lunatic Lock

The Lunatic Lock is certainly more puzzle than practical in terms of its possible uses. This padlock can be easily identified as out of the norm by the rather large bolt that is resting between the two arms of the shackle. Also, there is no keyway. The way to open it is by inverting the lock so that the bolt is in a position to be moved freely. Pull it out halfway, and then invert the puzzle so that it would lock, if pushed too far up or down. Wiggle the bolt a little at the halfway point, then it will lock in the middle position and the lock can open. It is certainly a weird lock, but perhaps not the best to use for your security needs. Opening this lock is sure to give people a headache, but it will not stand up to most criminals.

5. 1800’s Viennese Cover Lock

If you want to get some very innovative lock designs, antique padlocks are a great place to look. Before the public became satisfied with standard pin tumbler designs, lock manufacturers were trying some weird stuff. In this case, the lock was made more than 200 years ago, so you know it has some tricks up its sleeves. In the case of the Viennese Cover lock, it has several spring loaded panels. One obscures the keyway entirely. By applying downward pressure to the bottom of the panel, the keyway is visible. Then you need to insert the key. Once the key has made a full rotation, and moved the locking dogs out of the way, the lock is still secure. You will then need to move a panel on the back of the lock to the side and pull the shackle up simultaneously. Such weird maneuvers are needed, but what is really crazy is that the lock still works so well after 200 years!

4. New Gulshan Padlock

When you get a padlock with a key and a keyway, the method of entry seems pretty straightforward. But if you were to simply insert your key into the keyway of the New Gulshan Padlock, nothing will happen. No matter how you rotate or what you press on the lock body, the lock will never open this way. That is because the displayed keyway does not interact with the levers at all. Any attempt to pick the lock through this keyhole would be fruitless. What you need to do instead is depress a small button on the lock using the long thin protrusion on the key. Simply using your bare hands will not be enough, you must use a small tool. Once the button is adequately depressed, a spring loaded door will open, revealing the true keyway. The key can then be used to turn in this opening. Very tricky, and definitely one odd lock.

3. LIKE Gear Shift Lock

This lock, made by the manufacturer, LIKE, is meant to lock the gear shift on a car. The appreciation of a manual transmission is pretty rare, but it is still more common than this weird lock. The freakiness begins with taking a look at the key. They look like miniature key cards with small rectangular holes and indents punched into the thin metal. In all, the lock has 16 active elements. And I say elements because the pin like internal components are certainly not pins or wafers in any classical sense of the word. One of the ways that you know the lock is unique is that it is branded with all kinds of warnings about copyright infringement. The one thing a lock needs in order to go mainstream is people infringing on its patents, so it is no wonder there are no locks that use this system. If you put this on your car, no one is going to be bypassing it or picking, because they would not know what was going on in this crazy lock.

2. Saint Fire “Corkscrew” Padlock

When you see the key for this lock, you know you have entered the realm of weirdness. The keys to these padlocks are threaded like the “screw key” system that was used in ancient Slavic padlocks. However, the weirdness does not end by using ancient technology. For added oddity, the key also has dimple cuts along the helical grooves. By twisting the key into the keyway, you have started the insertion process. It must be completely twisted into place, and then a final rotation will release the shackle. This is different than the original screw key system that worked similarly to a modern day barrel lock. The Saint Fire captures a resurgence of old technology mixed in a way that makes it new again. The fact that this never caught is not surprising, just because of how weird it looks. Truly one twisted key!

1. Three Key Puzzle lock

In order to open this padlock, you are going to need to use 3 different keys. That right there is enough to make this one weird lock, but how you use them makes this one of the weirdest locks ever made. The lock does not even look like a lock. It is closer in appearance to a decorative antique. This is mainly because of the shape lock, and the lack of a keyway. To open it, begin by using the key with a square hole to unscrew the long protrusion at the bottom of the lock. Once this is removed, insert that same key into the new opening. As you continue to turn the key, the lock will expand, revealing a new keyhole. Don’t worry about that, quite yet. You need to insert another key in a different hole that has opened on the side of the lock. You have to screw this key into the side hole until it stops. Now the final key can be placed in the last keyhole. Complete a half turn in the keyway and the shackle will release. It doesn’t get any weirder than that folks.

Conclusion

What a bunch of weird locks! But now you know that you can unlock your security devices with Morse code or by finishing a complicated puzzle. There have never been more ways to open your locks then there are today. Whether it is ancient technology, crazy designs, or circuit boards, it can be used to give you some peace of mind. The practicality and safety of each of these locks will vary. Make sure that you consider all of your options before choosing the right lock for your security needs. For collectors, you cannot go wrong with these safety oddities.
