Message from ICT Office

The ICT Office would like to replace damaged laptop covers. We put together a very short survey so they know how many to purchase . Please take a minute to complete the survey. Once purchased, new covers will be distributed to homerooms before Winter Break.

Once the covers are distributed we will go back to enforcing the policy that all students must use a cover on their school MacBooks so make sure you complete the survey. The survey closes Dec 8th but don't put it off. Do it now! What are you waiting for? Go, go, go!

Keeping the Campus Clean and Safe

A reminder to all students about the importance of keeping the campus clean and safe.  Food and food remains left in and around the cafeteria and in other community spaces on campus may cause issues and attract pests.  ISB has an active pest control program, but the most important group to help provide and maintain a clean and safe learning environment is YOU!  Picking up after yourself in the cafeteria and around the campus will help to significantly reduce any issues in the future.  Please be vigilant in your efforts to pick up after yourself and eliminate leaving any food behind in these areas.

3 Winter Window Treatments

When staged according to the season, window treatments can make a huge difference in how someone feels about a space. In this short post we’ll cover 3 window treatments that are well suited to the winter season.

Layered Curtains or Insulated Curtains
Use heavy fabrics or layered curtains over the windows to keep out drafts. Or, purchase insulated curtains with built-in thermal backing. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Block Out Blinds
They’re reasonably straightforward to fit as long as you are absolutely pinpoint accurate with the measurement for the vertical runners, as they must fit the window frame exactly. I managed with only a few expletives. They’re perfect at night as they block out light as well as draughts, but need to be opened during the day to let the winter sun in, so they are not effective during the hours of precious winter daylight. Source: TeleGraph

Shutters
Plantation Shutters can be considered the best value winter window treatments for their aesthetic appeal as well as their ability to increase the selling price on your home (in addition to keeping you warm!)
Plantation Shutters, especially those constructed of wood, have insulating elements and when closed the solid, durable structure of the slats will keep the cold air out of your windows during the winter and will shade your home from the scorching sun during the summer.
For those looking for a cheap, fast solution for your windows, Plantation Shutters are probably not the best choice. However, if you are looking to spice up the room with some elegance and desire a long-term solution that will add value to your home- then this is the option for you! 5 Winter-Proofing Tips for Your Windows

The winter chill need not be a reason for an astronomical increase in your heating bill. Let your windows help insulate your home with the following tips:

Honeycomb Cellular Shades
Honeycomb cellular shades help to keep cold air and drafts out, not just from the window, but from around the window frame too.  It’s important to lower them at night when the temperatures are colder, and then open them during the day to use the energy of the sun to warm up the house. Source: GreenOptimistic

Weather Stripping
Use weather stripping to cover any gaps or spaces in parts of the windows that are moveable. First, clean the window parts thoroughly where stripping will be applied; then cut the weather stripping to size, peel the covering off the sticky side and apply where needed with enough pressure to ensure a good seal. Source: Overstock

Layered Window Treatments
To dress your windows really warmly, bundle them up in insulating shades (or cellular shades) with curtains hung on top. This elegant look makes any room feel more finished and will keep your house warmer. Source: Houzz

Storm Windows and Doors
If you have older windows and doors, adding storm windows and doors can help considerably. Window insulation film is another option to provide a layer of protection. “It really insulates the window,” Sassano says. Source: Money.USNews

Use Dark, Thick Curtains at Night
Another good way to winter proof your apartment is to use dark, thick curtains over your windows at night. During the day, if it’s sunny, you can draw your blinds back (so long as your windows are covered with film) and you may be able to receive some heating benefit from the sun. However, remember that nighttime is longer in the winter and that there may be cloudy days. When it’s not sunny out, you should cover the windows with dark, thick curtains, which can help trap heat. 3 Christmas Window Decorating Tips

Whatever theme you’re going for this year, your windows are one of the most fun to decorate. Make Christmas the most beautiful time of the year by doing the following easy tips on decorating your windows:

Hang Ornaments
Hang different colored ornaments at varying heights from the top of a window. You can use fishing line if you want them to look like they’re floating, or ribbon for a more colorful look. Try hanging some paper snowflakes in there to mix it up. Source: Punchbowl

Wreaths
Wreaths can look beautiful a window decorations in a lot of different settings. For example, the kitchen is a perfect example. However, make sure the wreaths are not displayed directly above the stove to avoid accidents. In addition, it would be best to opt for artificial wreaths given the humidity and everything else in the room.
You can also choose to display multiple wreath if, let’s say, the windows of your home are really large or if you want to decorate a glass door. You can mix and match several different wreaths with different dimensions and designs. Hang then with red ribbons from the curtain rod. Source: Homedit

Window Decals and Appliques
Windows are a blank canvas. You could buy decals, stencils, and other appliques or you could make your own. If you have a printer you can print out a paper stencil pattern of your choice and create the stencil from cardboard. To use a stencil you can tape it to the window temporarily and spray the window with artificial snow. You can also freehand whatever you wish onto the window by mixing dish washing liquid with cornstarch. To make your own appliques you can buy puff-paint from most stores with a craft section, print out Christmas images and lay a sheet of wax paper over them, trace the picture with puff-paint. Let it dry then peel and stick. Source: VisiHow
