We’ve recently become mesmerised by the Daily Overview’s bird’s eye perspective. We’re all too used to seeing our ever-changing landscape with our feet firmly on the ground, so we’re really enjoying witnessing the world from a wholly different point of view.
And, while we’re on the subject of perspective…
This last week of September has been World Green Building Week, and this year the focus has been on changing people’s perspective of buildings. We’ve participated by explaining how we retrofitted and, in turn, revitalised our sites in Herefordshire and North Yorkshire.
It’s also coincided with the near-completion of the UK Green Building Council’s office refurbishment, the centrepiece of which will be a fascinating green wall featuring 1589 plants of 12 species – sustainable and a talking point!
A few energy saving tips never go amiss, right? Especially with the winter months rapidly creeping up!
During the past month the Federation of Master Builders has taken a look at the changes we can make to our home to save both our pennies and the environment. Suggestions include everything from adding a layer of window glazing to choosing LED lightbulbs instead of normal ones.
Ah, the ever-pertinent battle between steel and timber framed homes…
In this blog post, the BBA’s Phil Bloomfield examines how both methods of construction have experienced a rise in demand over the past few years.
Steel framed buildings have seen a particular increase, mainly due to speed of construction and off-site manufacturing – benefits not dissimilar to those offered by the Kingspan TEK Building System…
… and the sniffles have begun for yet another year!
That’s what made Neil Dawson’s impressive ‘Horizons’ – also affectionately known as the ‘Kleenex sculpture’ – capture our attention on social media earlier this month.
You can view the rest of his work at www.neildawson.co.nz.

Just as you change the types of clothing you wear every season, it’s also best to change up your interiors. You don’t need to make drastic alterations; adding one thing or two pieces, or just changing some pieces is certainly enough to change the ambiance of a room. Let the changing of leaves and crisp breeze inspire you to do some of the tips below:
Autumn Textures
Growing accustomed to the new season comes easy with warm cushion covers and sofa blankets. Get your indoors feeling new by updating your curtains, carpets and bed sheets with an autumn colour palette.
Choose curtain colours that showcase nature by drawing on shades of gold, burnt orange, rich browns and creamy tones. Neutrals colours and splashes of yellow can also contribute some autumn charm to your home.
Keep in mind that although it precedes winter, the autumn months have a different decorative element to winter. Remember to:
Avoid thick curtains and bed sheets that will overwhelm your interior space.
Opt for soft rugs and patterned throw cushions that will accentuate the autumn colours. Source: OneFlare
Bowls of Seasonal Fruits
A trip to the grocery store is all it takes. Load your cart up with fresh apples, pears, berries and nuts and you will have a healthy and environmentally pleasing display. Other ideas are to bring the outdoors inside. Bundle sticks and branches together and place them by the fireplace or in vases and jars. Pine cones of all shapes and sizes can look quite lovely in large glass or ceramic bowls. Autumn decor shouldn’t have to cost too much. Source: Freshome
Candles
Der! We all know candles look great any time of year but they really come into their own and create a lovely glow when the nights are drawing in. Think more wintery, spicier fragrances rather than zesty summer scents. Source: TheInteriorsAddict

Whilst 90% of UK businesses rate energy efficiency as a high or quite high priority, the task of revitalising older offices and industrial buildings can feel like an insurmountable challenge. Yet, with a clear framework and plenty of drive and determination, even the draughtiest buildings can be transformed. We should know, having achieved it at both our sites in Herefordshire and North Yorkshire.
It’s fair to say neither site boasted particularly stellar energy performance. The Herefordshire complex between Shobdon and Pembridge includes two converted aircraft hangars and had most recently been used as a cement factory, whilst the Yorkshire facility in the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet had achieved a dire Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of F.
To turn this around, we introduced formalised energy assessment frameworks at both sites. The assessments helped to identify clear areas for improvement allowing us to prioritise developments.
As might be expected from older industrial estates, the existing facilities at both sites were poorly insulated and required significant levels of space heating. To address this, we overclad the warehouses with more thermally efficient materials. At Sherburn, we installed over 30,000 m2 of insulated roof panels in a multi-stage programme. This allowed the factory to remain open throughout.
Natural light levels were another area of concern, particularly inside the warehouse areas. Rooflights provided an effective solution and polycarbonate rooflights make up almost 7% of the new roof at the Sherburn site. This provides an effective balance of natural light and thermal performance.
Besides these passive measures, several energy saving and generating technologies have also been introduced. The first major change was the introduction of a combined heat and power plant (CHP plant) at Pembridge. The gas-fired plant generates base electricity for the site and uses waste heat to warm the buildings.
To tackle the site’s hot water demand, we also added two anaerobic digester plants. The plants use maize silage and fodder beet along with chicken manure from local farms. The first plant, commissioned in 2014, can produce 500 kW of electricity along with 370 kW of heat. This reduced natural gas consumption at the site by 56% in 2015 compared with 2013. What’s more, nutrients from the poultry manure pass through the digester and are available in the digestate. This natural by-product can then be used as a sterile and odour free fertiliser.
Earlier this year, a new 1.65 MW biomass boiler was also fitted at the Pembridge site. The external unit provides heating for the production line and storage space areas.
The large roof spans of warehouses are, of course, ideal for photovoltaic panel installations. In 2011, we fitted a 5,583 m2 array on the roof of the Pembridge site. With a design capacity of 800 kW, the array can meet approximately 10% of the site’s electricity demand. In 2014, we went one step further, installing a mammoth 15,000 m2 PV at Sherburn. The array covers an area equivalent to two and a half football pitches and generates around 2.14 GWh of electricity per year — enough to power roughly 500 homes.
We also introduced a number of smaller, but equally important, measures within both sites, including fitting smart LED lighting. To help organise these, an ISO 50001 certified energy management scheme has been introduced at Pembridge and Sherburn.
The process of retrofitting both sites has taken a considerable amount of cost, management and work. However, the results at both sites show it has already been well worthwhile. The Sherburn plant now holds an EPC rating of A, whilst the measures introduced at Pembridge mean our main Kooltherm line should be running entirely on renewable energy by the end of next year.
To find out more about these measures, along with lots more fascinating information about the wider sustainability work we carry out, take a look at our latest Sustainability and Responsibility Report.

If you're a tech news follower you will know that Apple released their latest operating system this week--macOS Sierra--this week. It has some cool new features that will be fun to try but the ICT Office has asked that we do not upgrade yet. They need time to test that all our school software is compatible with macOS Sierra--i. e. our printer software. When they finish their testing and they are sure everything works, they will give us the green light to upgrade.
Yesterday the elections were held for the MSSTUCO Executive positions for this year. Congratulations to the following Grade 8 students:

They are going to be a great team and are keen to work with all members of the Middle School.
At the heart of Tolkien’s Hobbit home is warmth, and we are pretty confident that there must have been some expert advice when insulating these abodes. Let this tongue in cheek attempt take you on ‘An Unexpected Journey’ (sorry, we had to) into the world of tiny house building.
First things first, you’re going to need to start digging. There are no high-rise buildings here, and this opens up the unique opportunity to create a space that is partly below ground. Advice from those who have undertaken these projects is to make the hole you are digging wider than your plans to allow for unforeseen mistakes. It’s easier filling in a hole than it is making one larger.
Next comes the foundations. The most important part of this home is to ensure that it is dry, because it is below ground and closer to the water table. The best option here is to lay a concrete base, on top of which lay your insulation. In this case Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard would do a great job as it provides outstanding thermal resistance with minimal thickness – retaining that much in-demand head height (for those of us who are not Hobbit sized). On top of this a separation layer, some chipboard and the flooring finish of your choice – we vote wood!
Now let’s build upwards. A concrete cavity wall is probably the best construction as it will support the most important feature – the green roof! By filling the cavity with Styrozone and a damp proof membrane on its external, you ensure you keep dry and ready for action. Don’t forget to leave a slightly slanted door opening for when you pack the soil back around the structure.
And now for the best bit… Let’s conceal this wonderful home with a green roof, hibernate under it in winter and watch it flourish in summer. To do this we think constructing an inverted roof would work best. A sturdy timber deck will support the earth and grass above. Once again, keeping this structure water tight is the priority, so a waterproofing layer followed by a geotextile layer should go on before the insulation. For this application we would again recommend Styrozone, topped with an Aquazone layer on to which you can put on soil, turf, wild flowers, or smoke your pipe above.
And there you have it. Pack earth back around the structure, attach an ornate wooden door and await your next adventure.

Putting roller blinds on your windows is a quick and affordable way to give any room privacy and shade. Here are some tips on fitting a roller blind, including: measuring the width, installing the brackets and adjusting the blinds.
Below are 3 tips on fitting a roller blind:
Measuring the Width
If you want to hang the blind inside the window frame, measure the width of the blind including the mounting brackets. Allow 5 mm extra space at each side of the frame so you can fit the brackets easily.
Decide whether you want to fit the chain of the roller blind on the left or right side. After marking out the position, fix the brackets inside or onto the window frame. The bracket with a protruding pin, hex-head fitting or groove is usually the side with the chain mechanism. Check first if this is the case, as it can differ from one brand to another. Source: DIY4Beginners
Installing the Brackets
So let’s get started. Firstly, offer up the blind to the window – it’s very important you fit the brackets as accurately as possible to ensure a snug fit.
You will have already decided whether to fit your blinds to the inside or outside of the window recess.
To fit outside the recess, position your brackets here
To fit inside the recess, you can choose whether to top fix into the lintel or face fix into your window frame.
To top fix, position your brackets here (recommended for uPVC windows). Make sure you allow enough clearance for any objects that could obstruct the blind, like window handles. Do this by measuring how far the handle sticks out, and make the same allowance when fitting your brackets.
To face fix position your brackets here (recommended for wooden window frames).
Fit the brackets into each end of your blind. Now position your blind at your window, using the brackets to mark where the holes should go. Don’t forget to position your blind correctly, depending on whether you are top fixing or face fixing your blind!
Now drill or screw into position, using rawl plugs where necessary. Source: Web-Blinds
Adjusting the Blinds
If you’re lucky, the blind will fit exactly. If the blind you have purchased is too long or wide, you can cut the roller and the blind to fit.

Hi, I’m Terry Whin-Yates from Mr. Locksmith. I’m a third-generation locksmith. I have a criminology degree. I’ve been in the locksmithing business for over 35 years. When I was in kindergarten I was making sets of picks out of bobby pins. I still have my first set of picks that I basically built myself from Allen keys, bits of hacksaws, spring steel when I could get it. So I’ve been building my own picks my entire life. I’ve been teaching locksmiths, police, government agencies for a long time how to open locks. Covert, overt, seditious entry. I’ve been teaching picking forever.
I finally decided to put together my own pick set, my own training e-book, as well as a series of videos on how to pick locks. The picks that I’m manufacturing for the Kickstarter program are made of high-quality North American made steel. This is the best steel available from Canadian or American manufacturers. We’ve got the best. The stuff you’re buying offshore doesn’t last a real locksmith one lock. My picks are high-quality steel, they’re manufactured in North America and the picks are fantastic.
This set will include the basic picks, the ball, the rake, the hook, those are what you have to use as a beginner. The three basic picks that you have to start learning with is the diamond, the hook, and the rake. These are beginner picks, but also some advanced locksmiths just like these picks. These are the basics; however, when you get your skillset improves and also as you run across different manufacturers, you use specific picks for that.
Ball and Hook is one of my favorite picks, but as you can see, the quality here. It’s high-quality spring steel, as opposed to the offshore made. Tension wrenches, same thing, high-quality that’ll last you a long time. Good high-quality North American made picks.
As an added bonus you’re not only get the pick set, my favorite tension wrenches, my e-book, my videos on how to pick a lock, as an added bonus I’m going to include my dumb key force tool, free. It’s an extra, it’s got excellent value for the dollar. Sign up now.

Hi, I’m Terry Whin-Yates from Mr. Locksmith. I’m a third-generation locksmith. I have a criminology degree. I’ve been in the locksmithing business for over 35 years. Some of the more radical ideas have included Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller’s vision to reduce New York’s energy usage by covering mid-town Manhattan in a giant geodesic dome and, more recently, Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu’s award winning proposal to build a giant video wall around Central Park.
In the final blog of this series, we’re going to take a look at some of the current trends in rainscreen and façade design, and where they may take us in the future.
The advent of the rainscreen façade has made it much simpler to create large, fully glazed spaces. Whilst this can create a more pleasant, naturally-lit environment, it can also lead to issues of solar gains and, consequently, overheating. To solve this, architects are increasingly looking to combine passive solutions, such as highly insulated rainscreen, with more active or ‘intelligent’ façade solutions.
One simple but elegant solution is LP2 Architecture Studio’s use of wooden louvre panels to clad a new office in Tehran. With summer temperatures frequently rising above 40°C in the summer, keeping out the midday sun was high on the priority list. The vertical panels extend across the windows and can be manually rotated when shading is required, whilst their natural finish helps to soften the exterior appearance.
Henning Larsen Architects has taken this concept one step further at the University of Southern Denmark Kolding Campus. The building façade comprises hundreds of triangular, perforated steel shutter panels. The panels are controlled using sensors which continually monitor heat and light levels, driving motors which open and close the shutters, giving the impression that the building is breathing.
Architect Doris Sung has suggested that the next step in the evolution of the ‘breathing’ façade is the use of biometal panels which curl when exposed to heat without the need for any electronics.
These intelligent façades form a subset of what are frequently described as kinetic façades.
As their name suggests, kinetic façades are a broad church covering any exterior which incorporates moving elements. This can even include rotating rooms.
However, some of the most effective kinetic façades take a much simpler approach. For example, to transform the dated façade of the Debenhams department store on Oxford Street London, Archial Architects chose to install a new façade outside of the original exterior comprised from 185,000 suspended aluminium shingles. When blown by the wind the shingles shake creating a gentle ripple effect.
Early on in the iconic 1980s sci-fi Blade Runner, the lead character, Rick Deckard, is driven through a futuristic Los Angeles complete with giant video screens standing over 30 storeys tall.
Whilst the film’s flying cars are still a thing of fiction, media façades have become a reality. Formed from hundreds or sometimes thousands of LEDs, these displays are typically used on low rise buildings such as the Blitzfänger installation in Vienna, but there are a few notable exceptions that have taken the concept further.
These designs represent just a few of the innovative facades currently being developed and installed across the world right now. As architects continue to embrace the flexibility and potential of rainscreen systems and look beyond the current reality, who knows what creations could be just around the corner?
