For a final Ignite project, we are required to take an action and raise awareness of environmental issues. For this project, we have decided to raise awareness for environmental issues caused by plastic bags. Plastic bags can be harmful when thrown into the ocean, and it can cause many deaths to sea life each year. Hence, we decided to upcycle old t-shirts into reusable bags to minimize the amount of plastic used each year. We would love for you guys to donate some unwanted t-shirts for our project. Please drop these t-shirts off before June 5th outside the MS/HS Cafeteria. There will be a box along with a sign above. Thank you for helping us to raise awareness!
Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, and saves enough energy to heat an average home for six months. A group of FA8 students have talked to Sodexho and have implemented a new recycling system for ISB. There will be new green buckets in certain places around the school that are for plastics and aluminium products. Some things that CAN'T be recycled in these buckets are things like plastic bottle caps, paper juice boxes, or anything contaminated with food. The buckets will be placed near:
-The main entrance of the cafeteria
-The tray return part of the cafeteria
-The back entrance of the cafeteria
-The main entrance (the ES entrance)
-The high school entrances
-The upper gallery
-By the glass box {6th-grade hallway glass box}
-3129
-3404
-The entrance for gym 1 & gym 2 (by the printer)
Make the easy and good choice to put your plastics and aluminium products in here so you don't contribute to global denigration.

This month’s Final Friday Five focuses, somewhat unsurprisingly, on the weather and the upcoming General Election – with a few guest appearances from other notable topics…
…Right?!
Temperatures have reached the late 20s and, while this is a welcome change from the norm, it’s likely you’ve been struggling to sleep at night due to the heat – despite all windows and doors remaining wide open.
So did you know that the design of your home could be having an adverse effect on the temperature within? Take a look at our blog post on the topic for more information.
The spring edition of Insulation Insight hit metaphorical shelves this month. Topics include the rise of tiny homes, psi values and offsite construction to name just a few.
You can download it for free at http://ift.tt/2eXoTcJ. Don’t forget to sign up to receive a notification when future editions are available to read!
With the General Election taking place in just under two weeks’ time, many of us are still unsure of who to vote for.
This handy tool allows you to choose from a number of key issues – including housing and transport and the environment – and view the main parties’ stance on each, without having to read every manifesto from cover to cover.
We’ve been keeping a keen eye on the RIBA website, with all Regional Awards winners set to be announced before the end of the month. A couple of ones that caught our attention include:
To finish, a quick reminder that we will be exhibiting at the CIH Housing event next month.

Finding the perfect window treatment is important because it should complement your décor and furniture at home. Below, you’ll find three of the most common window treatment problems and their solutions to help you achieve the window treatment look you’re aiming for.
Light leaks and gaps in window treatments
Windows vary considerably in width and height, not to mention all the other details that will impact the fit, such as trim, molding and sill depth. If you’re experiencing significant light leaks and large gaps, then it’s possible your window treatment is the wrong size for the space or the product wasn’t installed in the window frame correctly.
Choosing a custom solution that includes professional measuring ensures your window covering will be fabricated to your exact window specifications. When combined with professional installation, this guarantees your new blinds, shades, shutters or drapery will fit perfectly and function as intended. Source: AngiesList
Not getting the length right
The length of curtains is pretty vital to a room. Too short, and it’ll look like you didn’t buy them long enough. Many will say long enough that they hover just above your floor; this will allow the look of length but without the dirt dragging possibilities. But those who want a really formal, lux look might consider too-long curtains that pool at the ground. Source: ApartmentTherapy
Problem: Lack of privacy outside.
If you’re lucky enough to have a porch, back deck, or balcony, you probably love spending time out there. While you love the extra space, you probably don’t love the wandering eyes of your neighbours.
Solution: Hang curtains outside.
Put up curtains outside to give some space and privacy between you and your neighbours. Not only does adding curtains outside create privacy, it also transforms the outdoor space into another living space. Bonus room without the reno. Source: Blog.HomeStars

The external aesthetic of these buildings is a key part of their charm; however, most require a significant upgrade in energy performance to make them suitable for the modern world. The solution, both for these properties, and many of the solid walled homes within the UK is to fit insulation internally.
In internal insulation applications, every millimetre counts, and that’s part of the reason we recently launched our Kooltherm K100 range. With a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/m.K – the products are designed to allow specifiers and contractors to achieve the desired level of thermal performance quickly, and with a slim construction thickness.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen several unusual renovations take advantage of our Kooltherm range. In 2013, Pete Fagg converted the derelict, empty shell of a 19th Century windmill into a large detached home complete with a new barn extension. The following year, Phil Evans and Joanne McGirr restored a grade II listed church in the village of Gamblesby, turning it into a spacious holiday home. And just last year, Carol and Majid Nadry completed work transforming a 1930’s water tower into a large, multi-storey family home.
In all three cases, timber battens were fixed internally to the brickwork with a layer of Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board fitted between. Last month we launched the product’s successor – Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board – further enhancing the space saving advantages for homeowners. To take full advantage of these benefits, it’s essential to ensure insulation is installed in accordance to best practice.
Before installing timber studwork, guidelines should be marked out at maximum 600 mm centres around the perimeter of the external walls. Timber studwork, backed with a strip of damp-proof course, should then be mechanically fixed in place. The timbers must be deep enough to allow the desired thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board to be fitted between them along with a 25 mm (min.) air gap between the insulation layer and the brick wall.
Once the timbers are installed, the gaps between them should be carefully remeasured to ensure the insulated framing board fits snugly. Treated softwood ‘stops’ should be fixed to the side of the wall battens to maintain the air gap and to keep the K112 Framing Board flush with the face of the timber battens. The insulation boards can then be cut to size with a fine-toothed saw and any gaps filled with flexible sealant or expanding urethane sealant and flexible sealant.
Once the boards are installed, Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard can be fixed to the battens. The boards should be cut approximately 5 mm short of the floor to ceiling height. They should be located centrally over the timber battens, lightly butted together, and fixed using either drywall screws at 300 mm centres (or 200 mm at external corners), or large headed galvanised clout nails at 150 mm centres.
Fixings should be driven straight through the board so the head is slightly embedded below the plasterboard surface and positioned no less than 10 mm. Fixings should penetrate at least 25 mm into the timber battens without exiting the other side and care should be taken to ensure they’re not overdriven. Where sheet joints occur over battens they should lap by at least 19 mm. Once all the boards are fitted, the 5 mm gap at the base of the wall should be filled with flexible sealant.
Old buildings add diversity to our built environment and rich heritage to properties. By taking advantage of the top-performing insulation materials such as Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board, homeowners and building developers can achieve modern levels of thermal and energy performance, whilst retaining internal space.
You can find out more about the Kingspan Kooltherm K100 range in our knowledge base, or to see more examples of our products in action, take a look at our case study section.

The kitchen may not be the most important room in the house, but you do spend a lot of time in it. And, we know the best food is made with love, so it’s a given that you should feel comfortable in your kitchen. When it comes to your kitchen’s curtains, here are some tips that might help you choose the best curtains that perfectly fit your kitchen style.
Curtain Fabric
There are many kinds of fabric available for kitchen curtains from those made of heavy materials, to those made of lightweight fibers. Brocades and other heavier fabrics are usually not recommended as they obstruct air and light. The most recommended fabric for kitchen curtains is cotton because it is a durable but lightweight fabric that is easy to wash, and is thus ideal to the demands of kitchen action.
There are fabrics that have cute printed or embroidered designs that could definitely add to the aesthetic value of the curtains. It is however important to check if the fabric is light resistant so that it would not easily fade or turn yellow over time. Some kitchen curtains are quite thin and might need to have linings. Most fabrics are sold pre-shrunk so that their shapes would not be altered, however, if you are making your own curtain, you might need to make some allowance for shrinkage. Source: StreetDirectory
Curtain Color
If your kitchen already has a theme and/or color, you should take care to seamlessly integrate the curtains. Match them to the tiles (including wall tiles), counters, furniture, etc.
If you have tiles of neutral colors, you should keep this neutrality with your curtains. Focus your choice towards beige, white or pastel colors.
If you can, select a range of color samples that you like and check if they match the rest of your kitchen. Source: GroomedHome
Curtain Style
Curtain styles in the kitchen are country, contemporary and casual and like color we generally have a theme in our home and most of us keep to that theme.
For many a country style kitchen is popular since it incorporates earth tones that make the kitchen a warm and comfortable place to spend time in. There are literally 1000’s of country style curtains to choose from. Toile, Battenburg and lace curtains are just a few.
For many of the urban dwellers living in cities contemporary curtains/valances is the perfect choice. These types of curtains generally have straight lines without a lot of texture and are solid in color some have vertical or horizontal lines on them. Source: HelpfulKitchenTips

The Coaches
In 2016, the BRE launched the Home Quality Mark, a voluntary standard designed to provide consumers with information about the design, construction quality and running costs of a home. The Each Home Counts report also called for a “quality mark” both for energy efficiency products and the companies that install them.
This focus owes much to ongoing discussions around the performance gap – where the actual energy performance of buildings falls short of the design performance. One of the key sources of this discrepancy is the issue around workmanship and lack of attention to detailing. In insulation installations, for example, thermal bridging (caused by breaks in the insulation layer) can significantly undermine the energy performance of a home and potentially lead to problems with condensation.
By following best practice, these problems can be easily avoided. Take, for example, a new timber frame building with a brick masonry outer leaf. There are two approaches to insulating these properties with premium performance insulation such as Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board:
Regardless of which approach is chosen, best practice should be that the two layers of insulation are fixed so that there are no air spaces between them in construction.
Before cutting the Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board to slot between the studs, the gap between each stud should be carefully measured to ensure a snug fit. The insulation boards can then be cut to size with a fine-toothed saw.
The insulation should be installed flush with the outer face of the studs and treated softwood battens fixed in place to prevent the boards moving within the cavity. To limit air-leakage, any gaps or penetrations through the insulation layer – such as plug sockets – should be filled with flexible sealant or a combination of flexible polyurethane foam and flexible sealant or equivalent. A vapour control layer should also be installed on the inner face of the stud. This can be provided by vapour check plasterboard, polythene sheeting or with a couple of coats of drywall sealer.
Timber frame systems come with a layer of oriented strand board or plywood fixed to the external face of the studs, along with a breather membrane. A second, continuous layer of insulation can then be fitted externally of the breather membrane. The insulation boards should be restrained in accordance with the timber frame manufacturer’s guidance. If this guidance is unavailable, insulation boards should be lightly butted to maintain continuity and fixings carefully lined up with underlying timber studs, head rails and sole plates.
Large headed galvanised clout nails can be used to hold the insulation boards in place before they are tied into the masonry leaf with an appropriate timber frame wall tie.
Again, installers should carefully measure and cut the Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board to ensure a snug fit within each cavity. The stud cavity insulation layer should be flush with the internal face of the studs. Treated softwood battens can again be used to provide stops. Any gaps should be filled with flexible sealant or flexible polyurethane foam and flexible sealant. The external face of the studs should also be fitted with Oriented Strand Board or plywood sheathing.
Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard can then be fitted internally. The insulated plasterboards should be cut approximately 5 mm short of the floor to ceiling height. Sheet joints should be lightly butted with fixings no less than 10 mm from the bound edges of the sheet and any joints should lap the timber framing studs by a minimum of 19 mm. Where joints between sheets of insulated plasterboard are unsupported by the timber framing studs, timber noggins should be installed.
The insulated plasterboard sheets should be located centrally over the timber studs and fixed using either drywall screws at 300 mm centres (or 200 mm at external corners), or large headed galvanised clout nails at 150 mm centres. Fixings should be driven straight with their heads embedded just below the surface of the plasterboard. They should penetrate at least 25 mm into the studs without penetrating right through the timber, care should also be taken not to overdrive nails or screws. The perimeter of the Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard and the 5 mm clearance gap at the base of the wall should then be sealed with a flexible sealant or equivalent.
In addition to benefiting new-build projects, insulated framing board such as Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board is also a common choice for internal wall insulation applications on refurbished buildings. In the next blog in this series, we’ll look at some example applications and cover best practice for installations.
Further information about how to install within other applications including ventilated cladding and blockwork can be found within the Kingspan Kooltherm K100 range product literature.

If you have small windows and you want larger ones, but can’t afford to have them renovated, then this article is for you. Here are some tips to make your windows look larger using only window treatments.
Fabric selection
To make a short window look taller, make curtains and draperies from printed fabric with a vertically inclined pattern. Vertical patterns include more than just stripes; you can use any pattern that draws your eye up and down rather than side to side. To make tall, narrow windows look wider, choose a horizontal pattern that draws your eye across instead of up. If you want to create the illusion of both height and width, opt for a vertically inclined pattern, or use a solid or random print. You can use placement tricks to create the illusion of width. Make valances, shades, cornice boards and lambrequins from your curtain or drapery fabric, or choose a coordinating solid, random pattern or nondirectional mini-prints for a contrasting look. Source: Homeguides.SFGate
Layer curtains and shades
The same way a curtain rods can help you fudge on width, window shades can help exaggerate height. “Hang those shades right under the rod for the appearance of taller windows,” says Berry. Plus, this treatment has a very high-end look to it. Source: HouseBeautiful
Anchor the rod 8 to 12 inches outside the frame
Many people make the mistake of placing the curtain rod directly on the outside of the window frame. But anchoring the rod eight to12 inches outside the frame on each side, will make the window appear much larger. Plus, when the curtains are open, they won’t block any part of the window — instead, they’ll only block the wall. That means you’ll get much more light flooding into the room. Source: Zillow

The bio-degradable nature of wood makes it extremely difficult to accurately estimate when the first wooden structures were created, however, recent archaeology discoveries show that it was already in use by the period 5600 to 4900 BC. In the UK, the oldest wooden building still in use is Greensted Church, which contains timber planks estimated to date back to 1060.
In the UK, timber frame was the dominant form of construction from the middle ages right through to the early Stuart period, with Britain’s large native woods making it a cheap, fast and affordable construction solution. This began to change by the mid-17th Century for a variety of reasons. The lack of effective building regulations meant many timber frame buildings were susceptible to rot – greatly reducing their lifespan when compared with other construction methods. Over cramping of timber buildings also exacerbated the risk of fire and was a key factor in the rapid spread of the Great Fire of London. Finally, Britain’s oak woodlands had been largely exhausted, making timber much costlier. As a result, by the Victorian period, the timber structural elements of most UK buildings were largely consigned to the roof and internal floors of the building.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that timber frame construction began to see a revival as a long-term housing solution – even then, the change was largely restricted to Scotland. The cooler, wetter climate north of the border made timber frame a logical choice – allowing buildings to be constructed rapidly and delivering improved fabric performance compared with other methods of the time. Today, around 75% of new Scottish homes are constructed using structural timber frames, and increasingly housebuilders across the UK are embracing its benefits.
Today, the most common structural timber frame approach is open panel construction. A recent survey from the National House Building Council showing that around 70% of companies surveyed had used open panel constructions in the past three years, and around half expected to use it in 2016.
In an open panel construction, the skeletal timber frame panels are pre-fabricated offsite without any vapour control or insulation. Once the panels are erected and made weathertight and the initial electrical and plumbing work is carried out, insulation can be fitted within the stud cavity. Modern, premium performance insulation products such as our Kingspan Kooltherm K100 range can achieve thermal conductivities as low as 0.018 W/m.K. This can help housebuilders meet the desired level of fabric performance with a minimal construction depth.
For example, take a typical open panel timber frame home with 89 mm deep studs with a foil faced breather membrane, Oriented Strand Board and a 102.5 mm brickwork outer leaf. In order to meet our best starting point U-value for domestic properties in England and Wales (0.16 W/m2.K) all that is required is 70 mm Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board between the studs and a further 52.5 mm thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard internally.
As a result, housebuilders can construct highly energy efficient homes whilst preserving valuable internal space. In the next blog, we’ll take a look at best practice when installing Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board within open panel timber frame construction.

A wide variety of window coverings can improve lighting, privacy and efficiency in your home while enhancing or changing the design of an entire room. Here are 3 things to consider when installing window treatments.
Number & Size of Windows
Clearly the number of windows that need treatments installed affects the price of installation. However, like most home improvement jobs, there are some cost savings associated with increased volume because the workers and their tools are already on site. Therefore, while the installation of a single custom window covering costs on average $60-$70, the price to install two is less than double that, around $80. The price for three or more is similarly discounted, ranging from about $100 for three to about $120 for five window treatment installations. Source: HomeAdvisor
Material and Quality
Whether you’re looking to add some serious designer cred to the look of your home, or you’re dead set about stopping pesky sunlight from bothering you on a weekend morning, the kind of material you choose can significantly affect your price.
For instance, window blinds, shades, and shutters can be made from plastic, vinyl, metal, hardwood, faux wood, bamboo, and even fabric. Hardwood is among the most expensive material while vinyl is among the least. Lower-end materials can cost as little as $20 per panel while high-end materials can be a little more.
But quality of window treatments doesn’t just have to do with the material itself. The quality is also affected by who has designed and manufactured the treatments. A set of custom-made blinds made from hardwood, specifically intended to be eco-friendly and hand-crafted by a leading designer will cost you much more than a mass-produced vinyl blind. Whether or not these differences in price — which can be hundreds, if not thousands of dollars — are worth it to you depend on how you plan on using the treatments, the ease or difficulty of fitting blinds to your unique windows, and how much value you put in design and decor.
