3 Decorating Ideas for Winter Window Treatments

Inspire your windows with these 3 decorating ideas for winter window treatments and keep cozy during these cold months.  Consider the following ideas: adding a cheerful statement, considering bold prints and dressing up plain curtains.

Adding a Cheerful Statement
Think big and bright when making these bold ornaments. Red and green scrapbooking paper in fun patterns adorns shapes cut from poster board. We found ornament silhouettes online then enlarged them to suit the window. Glue three papers onto each ornament. Punch a hole at the top, then hang them on red cording or yarn taped to the top of the window. A valance of live greens finishes the display. Source: MidwestLiving

Considering Bold Prints
Bright florals that attract traditional tastes and graphic geometric patterns that offer youthful spunk are some of the bold prints being seen on windows lately. “With pattern becoming more important, it will change the way a designer designs for the window and how the client views her [or his] window fashion,” says Barrett. Source: HGTV

Dressing up Plain Curtains
Although it’s hard to go wrong with simple, solid sheers or panels, why not take them a step further? Give them a custom look by painting on a pattern or stencil, try glueing on embellishments such as silk flowers, beads or pom-poms. Or add bands of contrasting fabric to the bottoms of curtains that need a little boost.
Budget: Modest. Pretty trims can be had for a few dollars, and unadorned curtain panels for not much more. You also can go heavy on humble fabrics and light on expensive ones to get a more upscale look for less cash.
DIY: Absolutely, whether you’re working the sewing machine or wielding a glue gun. Source: DIYNetwork

BROcation – The Ultimate Getaway for the Boys

How to insulate Santa’s Grotto

We were recently contacted by a very important man who was seeking advice about how to insulate his home, which he mentioned is pretty chilly all year round. Read our response below…

Dear Mr S. Claus,

Thank you for getting in touch, and for all the information you’ve provided us with on your ornate timber framed home. It sounds wonderful, and it’s ever so helpful to have such an accurate construction build-up so that we can offer advice on the best possible insulation solutions.

As you probably know, heating and hot water can account for 60% of a property’s total energy use per year. (We’d hazard a guess that this percentage is even higher in the North Pole!) However with the right insulation this figure can be reduced, and you can prevent that cold and costly escape of heat.

Firstly, we recommend Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board for the wooden walls. This sits neatly between the timber studs, with a vapour control layer over the top and then an internal wall finish to suit Mrs Claus’s taste. As the insulation fits snugly between the timbers it allows for more internal living space than other methods of insulating… and more room for storing presents!

Next let’s insulate the roof. You mentioned you’d like a green roof, as this would make it easier for you to land nine reindeer and a sleigh laden with gifts. So, working from inside to outside we recommend Kingspan Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard under your timber joists and Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM on top, with a waterproofing layer mechanically fixed to support the green roof of your choice. And about the snow – we’ve learnt from previous case studies that it has great thermal benefits, so as long as you’ve waterproofed correctly you’ll have nothing to worry about!

Finally, your floor. There’s really nothing out of the ordinary here but we suggest some underfloor heating given your location. Floor insulation from both our Kingspan Kooltherm and Kingspan OPTIM-R ranges can be used with underfloor heating systems, but in keeping with your timber house we recommend using Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard along with a suspended timber floor.

And that’s it! You can keep warm and get ready for the busiest night of the year!

All that’s left is to wish you a very Merry Christmas from everybody at Kingspan Insulation.

PS. We hope we’ve made your nice list!

5 Last Minute Christmas Decorating Ideas

With all the rush and parties that happen during the holidays, you might not have been able to prioritize decorating your home. With only a week left before Christmas you might think time has run out, but it hasn’t!  Here are 5 last minute decorating ideas you can try before Christmas arrives:

Nostalgic Photo Display
A fireplace mantel mimics the function of a Christmas tree when festooned with ribbon, beads, and nostalgic photos. Decked in blue and white, this display can last all winter long. Simply remove the Christmas-theme ornaments and leave the snowflakes and photographs in place. Source: BHG

Good Wish Tree
Fill the house with holiday cheer by hanging holiday card cutouts from branches in a vase.
Cut recycled holiday cards into small rectangles and punch a hole in one end. For the blank side, invite guests and family to write notes of thanks and hope. Hang on fallen branches displayed in a vase. Source: MarthaStewart

Bottles and Branches
Gather empty soda or olive oil bottles and place branches with red berries inside to make these simple and elegant decor pieces. Green-hued bottles give off the right amount of Christmas cheer, but clear bottles will do the trick, too. Tie tags with holiday greetings onto the bottles for a finishing touch. Source: WayFair

Dress the Doorknobs
Yes, trust us when we tell you, it looks great. Add a bit of holly to your doorknob for a fun holiday/Christmas touch. Add a satin ribbon, tie a wee sleigh bell and you are done. If you do not have holly or don’t want to buy one, just snap some leaves out of any tree and tie them to your door knob with a ribbon. It will look just as pretty. Source: HuffingtonPost

Window Dressings
There’s more to holiday decorating than just the tree and the mantel―consider window ledges and empty bookshelves, too. Place pine boughs in a large vase and hang a handful of ornaments on them. Fill old jars with pistachio nuts, winterberries, or red peppercorns and nestle a tealight on top. Or go for a seashore motif, assembling an array of starfish draped with a length of plain red string. Source: RealSimple

We can surely help you out with all your window treatment needs. Contact us!

Each Home Counts – Bonfield Review

The Each Home Counts – Bonfield Review has finally been published and considers issues relating to consumer advice, protection, standards and enforcement in relation to home energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in the UK.

The report was initially commissioned in 2015 at the behest of former energy secretary Amber Rudd and former communities secretary Greg Clark in the wake of the demise of the Green Deal and focuses on protecting the consumer.

The review seeks to ensure that, in the future, conventional measures, such as insulation, always deliver the quality levels and outcomes that consumers have every right to expect, underpinned by the protection, service and advice so critical for householders. It also seeks to ensure that new opportunities offered through the roll-out of smart meters and other energy efficiency and renewable energy measures fulfil their potential in a way that informs and protects householders.”

The key recommendation is to establish a quality mark for all energy efficiency and renewable energy measures, and for all companies operating in this sector, with an underlying framework; a charter, code of conduct and codes of practice that must be followed to ensure quality outcomes.

Cross-cutting recommendations include the headings; consumer protection, advice and guidance, quality and standards, skills and training, and compliance and enforcement. Sector specific headings include insulation and fabric, smart meters, home energy technologies and application to social housing.  The work streams were contributed to by stakeholders from across the industry, and we contributed in particular to the ‘Insulation and Fabric’ and ‘Skills and Training’ work stream discussions.

The report highlights a series of recommendations to put the consumer first and includes suggestions to:

  • Make more of opportunities for engaging and liaising with consumers
  • Better use of assessments to gather information on the property and its vicinity and to ensure appropriate design and installation of measures
  • Ensure simpler branding in the sector via a Quality Mark
  • Improve selling practices to consumers via a consumer charter and code of conduct
  • Look at better delivery of quality installations, through codes of practice and standards to align with skills requirements
  • Requirements for consistent and robust monitoring alongside the codes of practice and standards;
  • Improved long-term consumer protection and a simplified redress system
  • Better use and availability of data
  • Ensure the benefits of emerging technologies are realised

We welcome the report recommendations and support the idea of a quality mark for the domestic retrofit sector.

The report notes that to obtain the quality mark, installers, designers and assessors will need to show that they have been certified by an approved certification body, and meet the requirements of three key elements of the quality mark: a Code of Conduct, defined Codes of Practice and standards and a Consumer Charter.

The standards framework will build on existing practice, including PAS 2030 and PAS 2031 and will include standards for assessment, design, installation, and operation, with particular attention to commissioning and handover.

The report highlights that, to deliver the right outcomes, the whole of the building fabric needs to be understood and addressing one element while ignoring others, or the interfaces, can generate problems. As part of the review, we argued for better consideration of the needs of existing properties, raised the necessity of good design to compliment better installation and highlighted the importance of junctions and the importance of adequate ventilation provisions. It is therefore great to see that this has carried through into the final recommendations.

Overall, we feel that there is still a need to help develop more robust retrofit guidance and we welcome work to develop a framework of new and existing standards to better support a national retrofit programme. These will sit alongside the new PAS 2030 / 2031 which is due for publication early in the new year.

As the review notes, standards need to become better integrated with a whole building approach and design incorporated into the process. This approach can then help to prevent individual aspects of home retrofit being considered in isolation (eg solid wall insulation or boiler replacement) which ultimately can lead to unintended consequences in overall building performance.

The publication of this review is an important step in the process, but is not the whole journey; the industry as a whole will need to engage and further build on these recommendations in order to help increase consumer trust and to create the stability and confidence needed for long term growth.

Types of insulation: A beginner’s guide

As our Technical Processing Manager has previously explained, not all insulation boards are the same. However, we understand that all the different types can be confusing.

This post outlines the different types of rigid insulation, and highlights which might be the most suitable for your application.

Vacuum Insulation Panels

What are vacuum insulation panels? Vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) are next generation insulation, which provide a high level of thermal efficiency with minimal thickness.

How are vacuum insulation panels made? A microporous core is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin gas-tight envelope. This removal of air eliminates almost all heat transfer.

What’s the thermal conductivity of vacuum insulation? Kingspan OPTIM-R has a design thermal conductivity of just 0.007 W/m.K.

Why choose vacuum insulation panels? VIPs provide the thinnest possible solution to insulation problems, while also providing an insulating performance that is up to five times better than commonly used insulation materials.

Where can I use vacuum insulation panels? VIPs can be used in a variety of new-build and refurbishment applications. They work particularly well in cases with space constraints such as flat roofs, balconies and terraces.

Phenolic Insulation

What is phenolic insulation? Phenolic insulation is a rigid insulation with a closed-cell structure.

How is phenolic insulation made? A wet foam mix is added directly to the bottom layer of facing. It then expands to meet the top layer. This is then cooked under pressure and cured in a second oven. When it’s ready, the phenolic insulation boards are cut to the right size and packaged up.

What’s the thermal conductivity of phenolic insulation? Our lower-lambda Kooltherm insulation achieves a lambda value of just 0.018 W/m.K across all thicknesses.

Why choose phenolic insulation? Phenolic insulation is the most thermally efficient insulation commonly used – helping you to meet building regulations – and has exceptional fire performance.

Where can I use phenolic insulation? It can be used in a variety of roof, wall and floor applications, which makes it a great solution for a range of constructions. Find out more in our Kooltherm Quick Guide.

PIR Insulation

What is PIR insulation? Polyisocyanurate (PIR) is a thermoset plastic produced as a foam. This is bonded to a facing to create an insulation board.

How is PIR insulation made? Like phenolic insulation, PIR is cooked under pressure in the factory and left to cool. It’s then cut to size and packaged up.

What’s the thermal conductivity of PIR insulation? The lambda value of our Therma range goes as low 0.022 W/m.K.

Why choose PIR insulation? As well as being cost-effective, PIR insulation is amongst the more thermally efficient insulation commonly used.

Where can I use PIR insulation? PIR insulation is often used on flat roof applications, due to its durability and compatibility with a variety of waterproofing methods. However it can also be used in a wide range of further applications. Find out more in our Therma Quick Guide.

XPS Insulation

What is XPS insulation? XPS (extruded polystyrene) is a rigid foam insulation made from polystyrene.

How is XPS insulation made? It is manufactured by liquefying polystyrene pellets then injecting a blowing agent under pressure. Once cooled, this creates a closed cell rigid foam.

What’s the thermal conductivity of XPS insulation? Our Styrozone range has lambda values of around 0.029 – 0.038 W/m.K.

Why choose XPS insulation? It is significantly denser than other types of insulation, which gives it a greater compressive strength. Its closed cell structure also resists both moisture and water vapour ingress.

Where can I use XPS insulation? Due to its compressive strength, XPS is regularly used in applications where it is going to be under some strain, such as car park decks. It’s also great for use in basements and inverted roofs due to its resistance to water absorption.

3 Care Tips for Your Window Treatments

It’s important to ensure that your window treatments stay in great shape all year long. Continue reading to learn more about some care tips, including: follow the manufacturer’s instructions, install window film and use air.

Below are 3 care tips for your window treatments.

Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions
Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning, care and handling instructions for window treatments. Check the tag for care instructions.

Install Window Film
Sunshine and dust are a pain in the pane to most curtains. Installing window film to block UV rays will help reduce fading while a gentle tug when closing your curtains will prevent dust from collecting. Source: Angieslist

Use Air
Window treatments can last a long time, looking beautiful for many years…as long as they are treated well. Many of our clients or their house cleaners wear jewelry and while cleaning their rings or bracelets and watches have harmed their window coverings in the past. Not touching them and using only air helps protect your investment. Source: Houzz

3 Window Treatments for Sliding Glass Doors

If you have sliding glass doors at home, you might have wanted to cover them at one point or another. Luckily, there are window treatments that can be made to fit them. Whether you’re trying to cover for privacy, or for insulation, there’s a window treatment that will fit your needs. Here are 3 examples:

Sliding Solar Screens
Perhaps no other design option complements a clean, modern sensibility like sliding solar screen panels. Particularly effective at blocking both glare and damaging UV rays, these can be paired with a clear window film to boost protective power even further. They’re an intuitive and incredibly elegant layer for sliding doors, as they mimic the style and function of the door itself. Source: Houzz

Plantation Shutters
When talking about window treatments for sliding glass doors, plantation shutters are often forgotten.  Most people equate plantation shutters to mean a double paneled shutter with a matching frame that covers a window opening.  The fact is, plantation shutters can also be created to cover your sliding glass door.  These are usually referred to as bypass doors.  The doors each slide past one another and usually overlap to block out light.  Depending on the size of the opening, and the depth of the door enclosure, will determine the number of door panels to use in a bypass door.  Two to three panels are used for smaller doors, and four or more are reserved for larger openings.
The door panels have a wheel mechanism attached to the top of the door.  This wheel then fits into a track that is installed to the top inside of the door opening.  The track normally accommodates two doors, one in the front and one in the rear.  If more than two doors are required for the door enclosure, a second track can be installed if there is enough room.
If your room already has plantation shutters in the other windows, bypass doors for your slider can make a nice addition and keep with the theme of your room.  The one downside of bypass doors is you never get the full view of your sliding glass doors.  You will always have at least one shutter panel visible when they are all stacked together. Source: DenGarden

Curtains
Curtains not only bring along advantages such as privacy and light regulation along with them, but they also genuinely help in elevating the look of your home. While the corner next to the sliding glass doors might otherwise go unnoticed, by adding an L-shaped curtain to the area, the entire appeal of the space can be uplifted with ease. Innovations like illuminated curtain pelmets also add a inimitable dimension to the room. Drapes that come in the same hue as your dƩcor or fabric that is similar to your couch cushions exude a sophisticated and refined atmosphere.
Curtains also turn your sliding glass doors into better insulators and hence aid in cutting down the power consumption of your heating or cooling systems. While they appear like simple additions that often take a backseat to the more fancy furnishings, curtains for sliding glass doors can truly uncover a whole new world of benefits for your home. What is an Energy Performance Certificate?

Much like the multi-coloured stickers seen on new appliances, Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) tell you about a building’s energy efficiency, giving it a rating from A (very efficient) to G (inefficient).

EPCs also carry ratings that compare the current energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions with potential figures that your home could achieve. These potential figures are calculated by estimating what the energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions would be if energy saving measures were to be put in place.

An EPC’s detailed recommendation report shows what you could do to help reduce the amount of energy you use, like fitting loft insulation, and gives the possible cost savings per year if the improvements are made. It also shows how the recommendations would change the energy and carbon emission rating of the property.

Why obtain an EPC?

Firstly, by law you must have a valid EPC available to potential buyers or tenants as soon as you start to market your property. For landlords, as of April 2018, tenanted properties must achieve at least an E rating in their EPC. If they do not, landlords will be unable to grant a new tenancy to new or existing tenants.

With regards to a new-build, it is the responsibility of the builder or developer to have an EPC produced when the home is constructed. The Building Control Body will not sign-off on completion without it.

Then there’s also the fact that the property tends to increase in value with a better EPC.

Research by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) found that there is a strong correlation between the price of a home and an increase in EPC performance. Researchers compared EPC G with EPC F and E and found that F/E properties were 6% more valuable. EPC D properties were valued at 8% higher, EPC C 10% higher and B/A 14% higher.

How much does an EPC cost?

The price of an energy performance certificate is determined by the market. Costs will vary according to the size, type and location of the property. However, it’s not a wasted investment – all EPCs last 10 years.

Where can I get an EPC?

EPCs can only be produced by energy assessors who are members of a government-approved accredited scheme for that type of building, and who have the appropriate qualifications or experience.

We have three accredited energy assessors.

Alternatively, you can search for energy assessors via the following means:

Enjoy Great Dining Experience and World-Class Entertainment with Ibiza Beach Club in Bonifacio Global City

A responsible business

COP 22 talks took place earlier this month, during which governments from across the globe came together to see how they can implement the agreements made last year in Paris.

However it’s not just at an international level changes can be made. Improvements at the local level, and within businesses, can help contribute to achieving the visions laid out in the Paris Agreement.

These international conventions put a spotlight on the importance of working towards more sustainable practice, one of the main areas being reducing carbon emissions. This is something we have been working on for a while now.

In 2008 a CHP plant was commissioned at our Pembridge site with the aim to reduce the emissions associated with our energy supplies. Waste heat is now used in the production process and to heat the warehouses and factory, which contributed to a reduction in use of natural gas at our Pembridge site by 56% in 2015.

Heat isn’t the only thing we recycle. Last year 85.4% of waste of was diverted from landfill.

But we still have to do better. We are currently working towards a target of 95% of waste leaving the manufacturing sites to be destined for suitable, non-landfill disposal routes.

We also have a commitment to source responsibly, which is why we continue to be certified under BES 6001. To accompany the ‘Excellent’ ratings for Kooltherm and Therma, we added OPTIM-R and TEK to the certification in 2016, achieving ‘Very Good’ for both.

Of course it’s not all about accreditations, it’s about the actions behind them. As a company we pride ourselves on our long term commitment to sustainability and responsibility in all that we do. Without business support it will be harder to materialise the pledges made during COP 22, such as the member action to strive towards 100% domestic renewable energy production.

At our Pembridge site, 100% of our electricity is from a renewable source thanks to the introduction of green energy contracts. It might be on a smaller scale but we know that every change can have a positive impact on our climate.
